Appreciate What's Emerging
Peter Senge spoke yesterday at a celebration of Char and Chuck Fowler and their gift to the Center for Sustainable Value that now bears their name.
During his keynote talk Peter pointed to some of the world's most pressing disturbances: The devastation caused by our lifestyle; anticipated shortages of clean drinking water; the fact that one of the leading causes of extreme poverty in the world is, of all things, our food system - a food system dependent on cheap oil and cheap labour. He spoke of cheap melons in the middle of winter brought to us by farmers who are going broke.
Peter put it plainly. We are in a moment in history.
He also spoke of a partnership between Unilever, a big player in our food system, and Oxfam. He shared that the boards of these two organizations have been meeting. He shared some of Unilever's intentions and plans to make a positive difference through their supply chain.
Chuck Fowler, of the Fairmont Minerals story, spoke of the work of The Fowler Center for Sustainable Value. His personal commitment to the work comes simply from a short-stated fact - it's the right thing to do. The charge put to the centre is to get to the how of doing the right thing.
There are lots of stories like these about important players, making important changes and contributions. And yet, the scale and speed is nowhere near adequate. Read More
