It'll Grow Jumbled
It doesn't take long in a garden or forest to see that things naturally grow all jumbled. In the jumble there are natural forces at work making the most of what's there, laying the groundwork for what's next and building resilience.

In one short story we see the number of movements Better World Books crosses. The organization is a founding B Corporation member, moves in the Conscious Capitalism network, works to a social mission as a social business, and donates $10,000 a day to non-profit organizations building literacy around the world.

This partial enumeration of networks Better World Books engages shows a plurality of methods organizations can adopt to make a difference.

An entirely plausible reaction to the way Better World Books works is to be confounded. They have a model that works for them. There is room for many models. What are we, what is our modus operandi; to be a business, a social business, a charity, a social enterprise? It is hard to resist the temptation to reach an operating theory, to build a framework of action that will tell us emphatically: This is the way to work.

Possession of such a theory might have to wait. For many, practice will precede theory. Act first, get results, rejig. Over time understanding will emerge. Read More
