Why Moving from Strengths Matters
Gallup, having studied the effects of the strengths movement, asserts that a person or organization will excel only by amplifying strengths, never by fixing weakness. We couldn't agree more.
 
David Cooperrider shared with us a story about a participant at one his programs on building a strengths-based organization. The participant told David that the strengths-based approach has implications for everything his organization does. He went on to share his regret that he had not heard of the strengths-based way of being until he was already done raising his children.
 
From the way we raise our families, to the way we educate our the children, to the way we shape our workplaces and interact with our stakeholders, the strengths-based approach is a critical element of living life well and making the most effective contribution possible.
 
When a strengths-based approach is taken a number of things happen in each of the three circles David suggests, the individual, organizational, and beyond.
 
On the individual level, a person who is learning about and acting on his or her strengths will quickly gain energy and enthusiasm for their work. In contrast to working on weakness, strengths bring a person into flow, a state in which they can lose track of time, are firing on all cylinders, and enjoying their work.
