Taking the Design Plunge into Democratic Work
How do you design the interactions people have in their work in a way that brings about the kind of organization you want to create? This is a question posed by Peter Coughlan of IDEO at a Business as an Agent of World Benefit conference in Cleveland a little over a year ago. 

The conference focused on designing business as an agent of world benefit and set its sights on massive global change. Speakers and attendees included such influential designers as Bruce Mau and Bill McDonough.

Peter opened up the idea that we are entering a new era of designing for participation.

Richard Buchanan developed the idea further suggesting we first designed artifacts and then communication. He too argued that a next step is the design of pathways for interaction.

Traci Fenton of WorldBlu also led a workshop there on democratic workplaces. Traci, and the organizations that have joined her list of democratic workplaces appear in our pages and stories often.
