THE BIG IDEA
ESOPs, Democracy and a Better Way
The current shakedown in the world of finance provides us a great space to discuss what we would like to see replace the patterns of thought, behaviour and organizational structures tied to the meltdown.

The severity of the 'crisis' helps to shed light on what we don't want to see more of. We are provided the clarity of sharp contrast.

One of the causes of the meltdown is the artificial success and growth made by playing games with 'funny money.' It becomes funny when there is no intimacy of ownership or understanding on the part of the people working in an organization about what exactly is going on financially. It's when that happens that aberrant organizational behaviour is given play and resources and attention are given to objectives that have very little to do with providing any real value to the customer, to society, or to employees.

Democratic principles applied in an organization are one such answer.

Organizational democracy is not something to pursue only for its own sake. Democracy is a process for effective organizations, and that is the job of leadership in an organization - to ensure and to deliver effectiveness.

That effectiveness can be measured in terms of the contribution an organization makes to its customer and therefore to society, and secondly in providing employees opportunities to do meaningful work. Read More

Make your
E-News a change tool
If you want to make your E-News publications effective change tools they have to convey more than just information. Include these four elements to get the most out of your electronic publications:
· Context
· Stakeholder Stories
· How To
· Call To Action

The question as to why we are communicating at all is the beginning point. If you are reaching out to your community with a communications tool there is likely some change you would like to see happen. If there is change you are seeking, you are taking on the mantle of leadership and one of the primary functions of leadership is to provide a sense of vision, of direction, of meaning.

So the first element of your E-News publication should be to provide that sense by way of context. Prepare a piece that sets the rest of your content in the context of some greater meaning. It's not that hard to do. Look at the latest events in your movement, set those events in relation to past efforts and tell your reader what this means for the future, for those involved. This will provide a sense of hope that there has been movement in the right direction and that more is coming.
