Trailering and liability: Opti parents and programs take note
A recent letter in Scuttlebutt by junior sailing parent, supporter and administrator Doug Paine of Mission Bay YC has produced some extremely important information. A
recent incident involving a junior parent towing a yacht club trailer
caused a good deal of concern about the liability issues involved. As
the parent advisor of our junior program I took the lead in researching
this issue. What I found was not good news for the club junior program
or the junior parents. Read on...

Preseason boat maintenance How many times have you had a call from the yacht club or coach to discover Johnny's Optimist is broken because of something that you should have/ could have fixed easily before the season? Now, rather than enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon, you're at the club doing fiberglass work rain or shine! Below is our short list of critical areas you can inspect before the season starts. Granted, some of these repairs may or may not be something you want to tackle, but they are all critical and if inspected and dealt with before the season you are more likely to have breakdown free performance plus save time and money. Getting sails to regattas While at the Valentines Day Regatta several of the parents were discussing the challenges of traveling with sails when they fly in and charter at away-regattas. It seems every airline is different, but many are charging over $100 each way! We also hear that the same airline can vary their policy quite often, so you never know flight to flight. Clever Opti-Parents have come up with the following:
One parent gently folds the sail in two, rolls it and slips it into half a sail box. The airline has been letting them bring the sail on board as carry on luggage. Cheap and secure, but again, what an airline will allow one day can change the next. The smaller the box, the more likely you will have no problem. READ ON... |
