It's My Space

Natural Horsemanship tells us that our horses MUST respect our space, bubble or whatever you want to define it as.  It is up to us to define that space and it is up to us to make darn sure that the horse NEVER gets into our space.  Right?  Well, not always.

Sometimes your horse may just need to be near you.  Is it the right thing to do to rattle the lead rope and snap at them to "get them out of our space"? Well, sometimes, but probably not always. We have to be good horseman and read each situation.  I've done it, I've seen my friends do it and now I am looking at it differently.

Perhaps all we need to do in some cases is let them come into our space, provide them the comfort they are seeking then ask them to go back to the outside of our bubble. I remember times when I was playing with Angel that she would maybe be a little unconfident with something, then after I stopped and was just hanging out, there she would be, hanging over my shoulder and instead of saying HI, I wiggled my rope at her and "kept"her out of my space.  I wonder how she felt?

Watching Joe play with Dawn at the Liz Graves Clinic was huge!  He was so engaged in play with her.  Dawn thought it was him trying to be dominant and Liz gently explained he was just playing.  So, they played!!  More on that next month.......

Angel Space

Perhaps Angel just wanted to be closer to Ray Hunt,
realizing she found someone who finally understood her for who she was.....
a horse,of course...lol!
