| Toys and Trailer Loading |
|

Trailer loading is one of the most complained about tasks relating to our horses. If you do not load your horse on a regular basis, both you and your horse get rusty. Don't have a trailer to practice in? Combine our toys and get the same results, without the danger of being in a small trailer.
First - show your horse each toy separately so he is already confident on how to navigate through them.
Next - progressively combine toys until you have your trailer simulator.
- Teach your horse to walk confidently over the bridge.
- Add your buckets and squeeze poles one side at a time and teach your horse to cross the bridge while squeezing between them.
- Add a tarp to one side of the poles.
- Add a second tarp to the other side of the poles. Hope for a windy day as this will really test your leadership skills.
- Place a carwash in the front to simulate going under objects.
- Finally - Add the trailer.
- Remember to teach your horse to go backwards too, so he learns to unload also.

Practice, practice, practice. Feel free to use treats for rewards. Take the time your horse needs to feel comfortable. Teach your horse how to follow your direction and watch his confidence in your leadership grow.
Positive experiences and progression help horses overcome their fear of the dreaded trailer. |

Bill Kamke followed the Pedestal plans included on the Horse Playgrounds Volume 1 DVD and now his horse Prancer demonstrates her curiosity. This photo was taken less than a minute after Bill put it out for her. Looks like Prancer is well on her way to being a star! Bill has longed for his own pedestal and is now on his way to achieving his Parelli Levels!! Great Job Bill and Prancer.
Rhonda got creative and combined the Noodle Squeeze and Carwash together to give her horse Marvin an extra challenge. Marvin is a 6 year old Mustang who ran wild until he was 2. He was afraid of humans as well as man made objects. Marvin has been trained using Natural Horsemanship Techniques and the toys created by plans from Horse Playgrounds Volume I. "Marvin has become confident, trusting, interested, curious and even playful with all the new and exciting things we create", says Rhonda. "These toys have helped to bring the fun back into playing with our horses."
If you've seen the DVD you will no doubt remember Joe and his pedestal. He loves going on the pedestal because he loves treats. To get Joe to use his mind more (and stop stepping on her feet as seen in the bloopers, lol), Dawn changes things up a bit by asking Joe to step his front feet off the pedestal, but leave his back feet on it. As horses get used to the toys and they start expecting your routine, then its time to include a diversion to keep their focus. If you look real close Joe is also now playing with the toys at liberty, no halter or bridle to direct him. A partnership is truly developing and the toys have simply made it more exciting along the way. |
