Living by Design

Update and Enjoy
It has been  my experience that houses are often built to fit the norm--not necessarily the people who call it home.   In all fairness, our lifestyles have changed dramatically in the last 20  to 30 years.  The technology has changed. How we watch TV, the size of  the TV and how we display it all factor in.  As we see it, the family  room is one of the most important rooms in the house.  Not only does the  family gather there, we often tend to entertain friends in this area.  It  is so important that this room reflects our lifestyle and our comfort  level.

In Dave and Julie's home, the fireplace  was the first to be considered.  It was tucked along a back wall, too hidden to be enjoyed. Even though it was an entire  wall that was crying out for attention, it was on the opposite end of the room  from the TV.  It was covered in outdated brick with an equally outdated  arched fireplace opening.  Since Declan and Dylan shared this room with  their parents, we needed to find a place for their things as well.   storage is often a major concern for families.  The cabinets we  designed not only created a lot of space for toys and games--they created an  amazing focal point.

Woven wood  blinds and soft textured fabric frame the window.  Hardwood floors were  added and then softened with an elegant area rug.   Lamps brought warmth to the seating area.  We thoroughly enjoyed  working with this family to create a room that everyone can enjoy.   Thanks Dave and Julie for allowing us in to your  home!

After careful consideration we were able to change the  location of the TV to create more room for seating.  The wet bar was a  common occurrence in the 80's.  I still don't know of anyone who actually  uses it in their family room.  It was the natural choice for the inset  placement of the TV.  A cabinet was created to fill that space and not  intrude on the narrow room.  Now the room is open and everyone can enjoy  both the TV and the fireplace.

Comfortable chairs were added.  The  leather chair swivels to accommodate TV viewing and conversation to those on  the couch.  I particularly like to sit with my feet up on an ottoman when  I watch TV.  This couple felt the same way.  Now there is a space  for everyone to sit and enjoy each other's company.
