Creating A Design Home

Diane Bishop Interiors is honored to be selected as the designer for the second year in a row for the Philadelphia Magazine Design Home!  And for the first time ever, the Design Home is a renovated manor home (built circa. 1928) with an amazing addition being added for the kitchen and family room.  So this year, we had the opportunity to combine the old and the new.  The challenge was to make the entire home feel consistent, sophisticated and charming.  We worked hard for almost a year to provide an exciting experience for anyone who is lucky enough to be able to attend this month long event.

Whenever we design a home, we like to experience the whole house.  It should flow nicely into the next room while allowing for variety and interest.  Each home is unique and should reflect the personality of the homeowner.  In this case, the people were initially fictional and then became very real as we progressed.  Lindsay, Tracy and I applied the same concepts and passion that we would with all of our clients.

We began with a color scheme.  In this particular case we wanted to appeal to a broader audience so we chose grays, blues and accents of orange and yellow.  These colors were all over the multitude of showrooms at the April High Point Market.  While they are the new trend, they also remain a classic combination.

We then met with the sponsors provided by Philadelphia Magazine to select tiles, hardwood, carpet, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, cabinets, closet systems and countertops.  The sponsors were anxious to showcase their new and cutting edge products.

The finishing touches are probably my favorite part.  I love fabrics and textures.  The window treatments soften the walls, absorb sound and create interest.  The furniture blends with the characteristics of an older home and also with the new addition.   I even added some furniture and artwork from my store.

Sometimes when we work so hard to make a house into a home, we don't take time to stop and smell the roses.  I am taking this opportunity to be at the Design Home quite frequently.  Drop me an email or call and let me know when I can expect you.  I would love to see you there and give you a personal tour!

The Design Home is open for Tours September 10-- October 9.  Thursdays 12-8 PM and Fridays though Mondays from 11 AM-4 PM.  Tickets are on sale now at 215-387-8431 or www.philarmh.org.  All proceeds benefit the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.  For more information please visit www.phillymag.com/designhome
