* Dynamite interview by Bill Moyers on the financial coup-d'etat. One of the most dramatic moments in Capitalism - A Love Story occurs when Michael Moore talks to US Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) and asks her whether in her view there has been a financial coup-d'etat, and she answers unequivocally yes. I wonder how many viewers have really registered the significance of this statement. A coup-d'etat is defined as a "sudden stroke of state policy involving deliberate violation of the constitution and substitution of a different group for the existing state authorities." We're used to reading about military and/or political coup-d'etats in Third World countries. Indeed, there is an ongoing coup-d'etat crisis in Honduras, involving the removal and subsequent internal exile of the elected President Zalaya. Bill Moyers interviews Marcy Kaptur and former International Monetary Fund chief economist Simon Johnson on the state of the economy.

* Revolutionary and economically beneficial changes brewing in the automobile industry. The technology lobbying group Calcars.org has been at the forefront of the latest information and initiatives on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric cars (EVs). As is obvious, at the present time the market for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electrics is minuscule (less than 1% of all vehicles sold) and is not going to have the kind of impact on our society's carbon output that is urgently required in order to realistically address global over-heating and related disasters. So the latest campaign this terrific group has taken on is conversion of existing automobiles to PHEVs and EVs. A leading expert writes: "Upgrading existing SUVs, pickups and vans] could be a multi-billion dollar business, extending the life of vehicles and preserving the energy cost sunk into building them. While Ford, GM and Chrysler are best-suited to engineer conversions, this mass rethinking of the company would be an even bigger shift than the current change to becoming manufacturers of PHEVs and EVs." calcars-news@yahoogroups.com

* Journalist-author Michael Klare on signs that America's global pre-eminence is over. The day of America's global pre-eminence is over. We must face the new global realities. Recent signs are: 1. Meeting in Pittsburgh in September, the leaders of the major industrial powers, the G-7, agreed to turn over responsibility for oversight of the world economy to a larger, more inclusive Group of 20, adding in China, India, Brazil, Turkey, and other developing nations. 2. America's economic rivals are conducting secret (and not-so-secret) meetings to explore a diminished role for the U.S. dollar -- fast losing its value -- in international trade, and starting to use other currencies or baskets of currencies for mutual trade. 3. On the diplomatic front, Washington has been rebuffed by both Russia and China in its drive to line up support for increased international pressure on Iran to cease its nuclear enrichment program. 4. Washington's efforts to secure international support for the allied war effort in Afghanistan have met with a disappointing response, including only a trivial and begrudging vote of support from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. 5. * Project Censored, the annual collection of most significant stories missed or buried by mainstream media, celebrates release of its 2010 volume. For more than 20 years groups of students in social sciences and media, together with faculty (headed by Peter Phillips) at Sonoma State University (SSU) has been investigating stories mostly censored in the mainstream media. After being reviewed by a panel of independent judges, these stories are collected in an annual volume that offers unparalleled insight and information on the real stories behind the events superficially reported in the mainstream media. * Noam Chomsky, the world's leading dissident intellectual, warns that the grievances exploited by far-right extremists need to be taken seriously Speaking at the annual Amnesty International lecture in Belfast, Professor Chomsky noted: "There is now a mass of people with real grievances who want answers and are not receiving them. A common reaction in elite educated circles and much of the left is to ridicule the right-wing protesters, but that is a serious error. Dr Chomsky said history had shown it was a grave mistake not to answer the calls of people mired in poverty, who are susceptible to the argument that rich liberals are giving their money to illegal immigrants and the shiftless poor. Note from Ralph M: Chomsky's warning is right on. Exploiting the real grievances of millions of unemployed German workers, was the vehicle that enabled Hitler's rise to power in the worldwide depression of the 1930s. * Norman Solomon's critique of the Health Care Reform/Disaster "In Washington, "healthcare reform" has degenerated into a sick joke. At its best, "the public option" was a weak remedy for the disastrous ailments of the healthcare system in the United States. But whatever virtues the public option may have offered were stripped from the bill en route to the House floor. What remains will launch this country into a new phase of healthcare apartheid. Not long ago, we were told that the Obama administration was aiming for a public option that could provide coverage to one out of every four Americans. Now the figure is around one out of every fifty. Not long ago, the idea was that taxpayer-funded subsidies were to be used only for the public option. But now the entire concept has been hijacked by and for the private insurance industry. All the "public option" proposals now provides is a massive funnel from the U.S. Treasury to the insurance conglomerates. The individual mandate is a monumental giveaway to private insurance firms. The specter of "healthcare reform" that requires individuals to stretch their personal finances for often-abysmal insurance coverage is the worst of all worlds -- government intrusion for corporate benefit without any guarantees of decent health coverage. The predictable result is reinforcement of vast -- and often deadly -- inequities in access to healthcare. With Washington making such a corporate mess of "healthcare reform," the best way to get what we need -- healthcare for all as a human right -- will be to enact single-payer healthcare in one state after another. But Speaker Pelosi has used her political leverage to quash Congressman Dennis Kucinich's amendment -- approved months ago by the Education and Labor Committee -- that would grant waivers so that states could create their own single-payer system. Pelosi removed the Kucinich amendment from the House bill. The California legislature has twice passed a strong single-payer bill, both times vetoed by the state's current execrable governor. The official position of the California Democratic Party is unequivocally in favor of single-payer healthcare. And yet Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, did what she could to sabotage the single-payer position of her own party in her own state. Sickening."
