International Day of Climate Action
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 October 24, 2009
On October 24, the
International Day of Climate Action will cover almost every country on
earth, the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's
history.
There will be
big rallies in big cities, and incredible creative actions across the
globe: mountain climbers on our highest peaks with banners, underwater
demonstrations in island nations threatened by sea level rise, churches
and mosques and synagogues and ashrams engaged in symbolic action, star
athletes organizing mass bike rides-and hundreds upon hundreds of
community events to raise awareness of the need for urgent action.
People in all those cities and towns all around
the world will be saying the same thing: science tells us that we can't
have more than 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere if we want a
planet like the one we were born onto. That sounds complicated, but it
isn't--350 is the bottom line for the earth.
The
thousands of events on October 24 will drive 350 and all that it
represents into the human imagination, and change the negotiating
environment as we head towards the crucial UN Climate Negotiations in
Copenhagen in December of 2009.

Canadian provinces to rethink flu plan
A
"perplexing" Canadian study linking H1N1 to seasonal flu shots is throwing
national influenza plans into disarray and testing public faith in the
government agencies responsible for protecting the nation's health. Distributed
for peer review last week, the study confounded infectious-disease experts in suggesting
that people vaccinated against seasonal flu are twice as likely to catch swine
flu. The paper has since convinced several provincial health agencies to
announce hasty suspensions of seasonal flu vaccinations, long-held fixtures of
public-health planning in Canada. Dr. Ethan
Rubinstein, head of adult infectious diseases at the University of Manitoba, who
has read the study, said it appears sound. "There are a large number of
authors, all of them excellent and credible researchers," he said. "And the
sample size is very large - 12 or 13 million people taken from the central
reporting systems in three provinces. The research is solid."

Congressional
Oversight Committee doesn't know where the hundreds of billions of dollars of
bailout money went.
Elizabeth
Warren, Chairman of the Congressional Oversight Committee that is tasked with
scrutinizing how the Treasury Department has spent $700 billion to shore up our
failing financial institutions. There's a wonderful moment [in the movie
"Capitalism: a Love Story"] when [Michael Moore] asks you where the
$700 billion is, and you look at him and you say, "I don't know." So
the question is: why don't you know? WARREN: Well, we don't know where the $700
billion is because the system was initially designed to make sure that we
didn't know. When Secretary Paulson first put this money out into the banks,
he didn't ask "what are you going to do with it?" He didn't put any
restrictions on it. in other words, he didn't ask. And if you don't ask, no one
tells. And so we have a system that originally put more than $200 billion
into the financial institutions basically saying just take it. INTERVIEWER: And
that money is gone. You have not been able to track where that money is?
WARREN: Well, we don't know where the money went from the financial
institutions. The big conversation at the time was that the credit markets are
frozen; if we put money into the financial institutions, they will start
lending it because that's what they do when they receive money. It was called
the "Healthy Banks Program." Secretary Paulson kept saying, over and
over, these are investments in healthy financial institutions, no one needs any
subsidy, that [the] money was going to be used in lending to small businesses
and consumers and kind of get our whole credit market going again. That didn't
happen.

Democrats of America is a

PDA is working at present on what they call the "flawed cap and trade bill"
wending its way through Congress. It needs amendments that make renewable

these amendments, then it is likely any effort to improve the legislation will
come too late to reverse the impending damage of global warming.

Self-Health Systems and Norm Shealey, MD
For over 3 decades, Norm Shealy as been at the forefront of Alternative
Medicine and Health Care. In the mid-60s he introduced his major innovations
for pain control ---Dorsal Column Stimulation (DCS) and Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation, both now used world-wide. Then he turned his

Overall, Norms work has expanded the field of Energy Medicine, using
electrical, electromagnetic, mental, physical and emotional tools for health
enhancement. He has been president of the International Society for the Study
of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine.
Throughout his career, Norm has considered Self-Health to be the foundation for
all of life. He founded Self-Health Systems in 1974, to provide tools for
assisting individuals in their approach to health. Most recently, Norm has

No Impact Man
Author Colin Beavan, in
research for his next book, began the No Impact Project in November 2006.
A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no longer avoid pointing the
finger at himself, Colin leaves behind his liberal complacency and vows to make
as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more
automated transportation, no more trash, no more electricity, no more non-local
food, no more material consumption. At first reluctantly and then supportively,
his wife Michelle and their two year-old daughter, go along with his vision and
the story becomes an often funny and touching demonstration of the follies of
our addictive consumerist life-style. What this family found, to their
surprise, in giving up so much of what they needed was that they became
healthier, happier and more at peace with their conscience, their community and
their world. What my 20-year old daughter liked best about the film was the way
the couple resolved their differences and disputes without rancor or fighting,
but obvious love and much humor.
Look for this film in your local independent movie theatre or buy them when
available on DVD.
