Health Benefits of Cinnamon
|
|
The earliest records of the use of cinnamon dates back to 2700 B.C in China, Europe, and Egypt. Cinnamon is a spice widely used around the holiday season from cooking to potpourri, but did you know that there are many healthy benefits to this spice as well? Anti-clotting agent and an antimicrobial are two of this spices benefits.
Some major effects of cinnamon are:
ˇ Components of cinnamon act as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory which may prove beneficial in reducing the symptoms of arthritis or urinary tract infections.
ˇ Cinnamon may help to improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. It is thought that some compounds within cinnamon help to stimulate the insulin receptors to allow the use of glucose more effectively.
ˇ Some preliminary research suggests that the aroma of cinnamon may act as a cognitive stimulant allowing improvements in memory and recognition.
As you are spicing up your fall and winter lattés and feasts; take some time to recognize the great history and benefits that cinnamon may provide. For more information regarding cinnamon and cinnamon supplements follow this link to WebMD.

| Bill's Blog Q & A Article |

Once again, I want to thank all of the faithful readers out there for all of your outstanding questions. This month I would like to comment about my post regarding resistance training for flexibility. One reader asks "I have been having difficulties with my flexibility for years. I have attempted stretching but it didn't seem to have much effect. What should I do?"
First, if you are having any pain or discomfort due to the inflexibility it may be worthwhile to get evaluated by a physical therapist. They will be able to help you decide the best plan of attack to begin a program to help you. If you are not having discomfort I would recommend doing some research on the stretches that you are performing, make sure that you are performing the activity properly. As the saying goes "perfect practice makes perfect." Also I would as this article suggests I would add some resistance exercises to your routine. Light weights or therabands are generally available and can act as a great range of motion/resistance exercise.
I hope this helps! As general flexibility goes the best plan of action is to combine stretching and resistance exercises to maximize your healthy benefits from your workout.
