Bill's Blog Question & Answer

Bill in Photo Frame

Following my recent post on our blog about barefoot running, we received several follow up questions.  One comes from a long time client who wanted clarification on the subject.  I thought I'd share the exchange with everyone who wanted to learn more on the topic.

"I have been an avid runner for the past 5 years and have heard a lot about barefoot running.  Do you think this is a good idea?  What is the best way to get started?"

Following the publication of many articles and books, barefoot running has become very popular among runners.  First, I would like to say that jumping into barefoot running without adequate preparation will most likely result in injury.  Generally, most studies of barefoot runners have been done on populations where people live and work barefoot.  That being said, if you are interested in taking up barefoot running do the following: (1) see a medical professional for evaluation to determine if barefoot running is right for you (2) start to wear your barefoot running shoes around the house or while performing light activities (3) when you can wear your barefoot shoes during light activity without pain or discomfort, it may be safe to begin more advanced and strenuous activity.

By wearing your barefoot shoes during light activity, you will begin to build the strength in the smaller muscles that control your ankles and feet.  These muscles may not be as active when you are wearing shoes.

Before you "dive into" barefoot running, I would recommend researching the topic as well as talking with people who already run barefoot.  - William Milhizer, DPT, PT

Advances in Total Joint Replacement

Joint Replacement Nanotechnology

Recent advances in total joint replacements may allow for a longer lifespan of the devices. Scientists at the University of Alabamahave been researching "nanodiamonds".  Nanodiamonds are described as small diamonds that are a billionth of a meter in size. These would be used to coat the joint surface of the already existing joint replacement. This coating is very durable and smooth; as it is attached to the metal of the joint replacement, it would provide strength and reduce friction. Ultimately, it will reduce the amount of wear on the device.  Since the average lifespan of a total hip is about 10-15 years, this is a great step forward in medical technology. The amount of repeat procedures and complications from wear may also save time and money.  Testing may begin as early as this fall and the replacement devices may only be a few years away from the market.
