Easy Ways to Boost Memory!
|
Forgetting where you parked your car at the mall, the name of
your second cousin's daughter or anything else you try to recall, can be
frustrating and embarrassing. But it doesn't have to be.
Boosting your memory can be as easy as choosing the right
foods and getting a little extra sleep. To combat a poor memory, check out the
list of memory boosting techniques below.
1. Get enough sleep. While you sleep your brain
sorts, compiles and stores all of the information and memories it accumulates throughout the day.
2. Eat right. Try a diet rich in memory boosting
vitamins like Folate (leafy vegetables and legumes), B12 (meat, milk and eggs)
and DHA (fish). Green and black teas have also been known to increase memory
function.
3. Exercise. Studies show that exercise increases the
flow of blood to the brain which can prevent the decline of brain function and
memory.
4. Try something new.Routing activities are often
done without thinking. Trying something new or doing a routing activity a
different way, fires up the brain with
new data.
Adopt these easy steps into your lifestyle to improve your recall ability and your overall brain function. Say goodbye to forgetfulness today!

Exercising with Type 2 Diabetes
|
Type 2 diabetes is chronic condition characterized by the
body's in ability to metabolize sugar (glucose), which is the body's main source
of energy. The consequences of this condition can be life threatening if left
untreated. But with a healthy diet and even exercise, you can get your type 2
diabetes under control.
A recent study published in Physical Therapy, the
scientific publication of the National Association of Physical Therapy, found
that physical therapy directed exercise combined with fitness center based
training can improve the muscle strength and exercise capacity in those with
type 2 diabetes.
Exercise can also benefit those with type 2 diabetes by:
- Improving
the body's use of insulin,
- Improving
bone strength and density,
- Lowering
blood pressure,
- Improving
blood circulation, thereby lowering the risk for heart disease,
- Increasing
energy level and lowering stress.
When exercising, your body
releases stored levels of glucose to accommodate the body's increased exertion level. But
diabetics should be careful not to over do it, as too much stress on the body
will have the reverse effect and your blood glucose levels could increase.
And as always, consult your physician or Empire Health and Wellness
Center before you being an exercise regimen or to learn more about the effects
of exercising with type 2 diabetes. |
The Forgotten Vitamin
|
Vitamin D is an important nutrient that is often overlooked.
Essential to bone development, Vitamin D also allows body cells to utilize
calcium, muscle fibers to develop and grow, and the immune system to function
properly.
A deficiency in Vitamin D can lead to rickets in children, impaired bone mineralization,
osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis. To a lesser
degree, it can also lead to injury during physical activity because of it's
importance to bone and muscle development.

Unlike other nutrients, Vitamin D can be obtained by
exposure to sunlight, as well as through supplements and foods, like fatty
fish, cheese, dairy and grains. But be careful not to get too much of a good thing.
In rare instances, too much of the supplement can lead to a vitamin overdose.
So before you begin a regimen of vitamin supplements, or to
ensure your bones and muscles are healthy, consult your physician or make an
appointment with Empire Health and Wellness Center.
