Healthy News

Greetings!
What goals do you have for your health and fitness?

Many people focus on their weight and watch the numbers on the scale.  However, your health and well being should not be judged exclusively by the scale.

When we help our physical therapy patients and gym members gain full range of motion and strengthen their joints and muscles, sometimes it leads to weight loss. We believe that once you invest time to improve your strength and mobility, positive effects will carry over to all aspects of your life.

One of the smartest things you can do is to be proactive for your wellness.  We encourage everyone to make their health a #1 priority.

Be well,

Are You Setting Realistic Goals?
We need to set realistic goals that are both aggressive enough to test our limits and achievable. Setting unrealistic goals is one of the biggest reasons that people abandon their health and fitness routine and/or weight loss program.

At Empire Health & Wellness Center we set realistic wellness goals as well as provide a plan to achieve those goals.

There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach here. You and a member of our staff will work together to devise an individual program geared to your goals and the amount of time you plan to commit.

Here are some examples of goals that our patients have...

- "I want to ease the back pain I get while gardening."

- "I want to stop the numbness I am getting in my feet."

- "I have been experiencing dizziness and am afraid it is going to affect my driving. I want to find out how to manage it without drugs."

- "My husband and I like to play golf, but lately my shoulder is too sore. I want to find out what strengthening exercises are safe to do so I don't put more strain on it."

Sometimes it is not realistic for a patient to fully achieve their goal, but we are able to find ways to greatly improve their current situation. Working in tandem with patients' doctors, we are able to ensure coordinated care and follow-up.

We welcome the opportunity to help you achieve your own wellness goals. Please call us at 518-690-4406 to set up an appointment.

The Risk of Exercise
woman stretchingYes, in spite of the well-documented benefits of exercise, exercise does have some risks.

How does this happen? It happens when only one type of activity puts repetitive strain on a specific joint or muscle. If this has happened to you, then we suggest you schedule an appointment with us so we can assess your situation and provide you with a customized cross-training program.

Cross-training works different parts of the body in a carefully orchestrated series of movements that are changed over time to prevent strain and injuries.

In Praise of Peppermint
peppermint leavesPeppermint is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs.  It has a very wide range of uses, from soothing digestion to improving concentration and mental accuracy to reducing inflammation.

You can buy a bottle of peppermint oil (found in the health food section of most grocery stores or at the Honest Weight Food Co-op, http://www.hwfc.com/).

You will find lots of other uses for it, including:

- Add a drop of peppermint oil to herbal tea to aid in digestion and relieve heartburn.

- Massage several drops of peppermint oil on area of injury to reduce inflammation.

- Rub four drops of peppermint oil on the chest and stomach to relieve travel sickness.

- To kill aphids, mix 4-5 drops of peppermint oil to 4 ounces of water in a spray bottle and spray plants.

- Rub peppermint oil on joints to relieve arthritis or tendonitis pain.

- To relieve a headache, rub a drop of peppermint oil on the temples, forehead, over the sinuses (being careful to avoid the eyes) and on back of neck.

- Mix peppermint oil in a footbath to relieve sore feet (keep water agitated while soaking feet).

You might find that a bottle of natural peppermint oil will replace lots of over-the-counter remedies!
