| FourthWork Day The Rain Cometh |
| |
Dear Stockholders,
It poured this morning. The supply storage room at the center flooded to people's ankles. But everywhere else was fine. The mountain roads had running water and mudslides were reported in other areas. Finally the deluge stopped about 1 pm. As a result, some groups got more done than others depending on their assigned tasks. Tomorrow should be a humid scorcher but the rain today helped moderate the heat a bit.
Tonight was the traditional picnic get-together for the workers and their homeowner families. As usual, our Wisconsin contingent brought brats from home. The brats attracted ASP staffers from other centers who were tired of hot dogs and heard the brat rumors. Most of the families came.
After the picnic, our whole group was treated by the Potter family, in memory of their late son, Nathan, to ice cream at Scoops, the local mom and pop ice cream place. Eric says they almost wiped them out of ice cream but the owners are thrilled to have the business.
People are more tired now but attitudes are still good. After all, they are sweaty, dirty and nasty together.

| Group One -
Bob Cook, Nancy Anderson, Sam Aeschbacher, Taylor Waldron, Tristin Cook-Ziegler, Erika Ballentine, Patti Bykowski
|
| | "All our kids are great! We finished the ditch with a lot of help from the family's three little boys. It rained most of the day. We were able to put in a little insulation under the house until it got too wet. We stopped & helped Group 2 move old shingles up the long, steep hill. We hope it's dry enough tomorrow to finish our insulation project." |
| Group Two - Dennis Han, Amy Gigure, Ryan Ballentine, Kyle Kocher, David Anderson, Jack Middleton, Anna Novak |
| | Today was a great day. Lots of inside work. We finished the crown molding! Finished patching some holes in the hallway with mud & drywall. All in all, a great day. Hope to see you soon! |
| Group Three - Jim Grana Ann Yurkowitz, Bryn Summers, Connor Cook, Daniel Francis, Alana Blegen, Jenai Ellner |
| | Their day in verse by Group 3: Listen my friends to a story, A story of mystery & magic, A story describing the results At the worksite of Sleeping with Static. (the official ASP name for the worksite)
The morning began a bit rainy, Preventing us from working outside. But the drain trench we dug was effective, Only small puddles, not a big mudslide.
From outside to inside we went, Working with primers & paint. Connor, Dan, Alana, and Jenai All worked until very late.
Meanwhile, Jim took command, Working with his partner Anne. But a small slip with a craft knife leaves him dripping blood All the way to the van!
Luckily the wound was a small one But a crowd quickly gathered Treatment was surely given, With peroxide the wound was slathered!
At the end of the day, we're another day older, And so we packed into the van. The work we did made us all feel better And this poem was written by Dan! |
| Group Four -
Justin Holmes, Dave Dettinger, Donna Tipton, Colin Han, Julia Rothacker, Olivia Mason, Frances Stuebe
|
| | "Colin, Dave, Donna, Frances, Julia, Justin and Olivia completed the retaining wall today! We had Olivia decorate all the team members with mud which was awesome! We moved two railroad ties today bringing our total ties moved out of the way to 28 this week. Also moved 5 tons of gravel, put in four cable ties and fixed a waterline. (Editor's note: You know, the one they accidentally cut yesterday...) Our project is now done a day early despite the heat and rain. All is well. See you soon!" |
| Group Five -
Kevin Novak, Jessie Grober, Grace Modrinski, Randy Grzybowski, Pierce Ellner, Ozzie Hermes, Sarah Skinner
|
| | "Grace, Sarah & Jessie did a great job caulking the bathroom and painting over some spots. Pierce and Randy did an amazing job siding the house. Kevin helped with digging the drainage ditch. We all got wet and muddy." I'm guessing Ozzie wrote this since he modestly doesn't mention himself.
|
| Group Six -
Bill Aeschbacher, Bonnie Barr, Alex Sechtig, Lizzie Hermes, Danny Pejsa, Luke Trebatoski, Kaitlyn Weber
|
| | "After helping elsewhere yesterday, we were back at Bertha's to finish up our drywalling. Alex is a great supervisor/project manager! Luke, Kaitlyn, Lizzie & Dan are experts at mudding and taping for drywall. Also, we started removing some flooring and spent time loading an entire dump truck with debris. We had a great time at the picnic. Hope everyone at home is doing well!" |
| Group Seven -
Bob Patterson-Sumwalt, Karina Lathrop, McKenzie Raymond, Kevlyn Holmes, Alex Saxton, Josiah Ellner, Wolf Hentzen |
| | "We all had different highlights today but progress-wise by far the most exciting part was we finished stapling the house wrap over the insulation under the trailer. Kevlyn's favorite part was then going around poking holes in the wasp nests. :) McKenzie and Karina had an awesome time hammering in 2 x 4 studs to help redo the frame for the underpinning. Alex had a good chat with Sherman, the dad in the family. Bob P-S had a great moment reading a book to 3-year-old Cheyenne. To top it all off, the heat was not too bad and there were no wasps. Amazing!" |
| Group Eight: Susie Raymond, Bruce Thompson, Drew Summers, Nathan LaFrombois, Katie Delaney, Parker Sumwalt |
| | "Drew accomplished detailing work around the door frame. Parker strategically/accidentally took a rock off a mud wall to create a dry place for Nathan & Randy to stand while completing the siding of that side of the house. The house itself is only a foot away from the mountainside. Tight quarters. Katie helped her teammates with caulking in the bathroom. She found it is her newfound talent. Bruce completed waterproofing the lower level of the house. Maybe this morning's rain was God's way of helping motivate us to improve the drainage around the house. Susie and Parker hung an essential piece of siding which was complicated but completed that side of the house." |
| Group Nine -
Gary Summers, Amy Mason, Marshall Sumwalt, Riley Mehls, Laura Barhnes, Katie Harris, Eric Thompson |
| | "Highlights: RAIN, RAIN, RAIN! The girls, though, worked inside on tiling. We are almost done with the room! We will definitely be done with it. The boys continued working on the subfloor in the other bedroom. Lots of cutting and nailing of wood! Tomorrow we hope to get the room all ready for a shiny layer of linoleum. Great night tonight with our family at the picnic!" |
| Group Ten -
Eric Rose, CJ Bacelis-Bush, Andy Thompson, Austin Middleton, Nic Bradley, Clare Aeschbacher, Cassie Sechtig |
| | "Today our group was showered with love from God--in liquid form! It was raining Kentucky cats and dogs from morning devotions until mid-morning. Our wet beginning wasn't too bad, though and we completed the house wrap under the house. So the insulation project is finished! All the hard work paid off, knowing that Gertrude will have a warmer home next winter. After lunch, we split into two groups. Clare, Austin & CJ on one side of the house and Nic, Andy, Cassie and Eric on the other. Both groups worked frantically to put the bottom plates on the trailer frame in order to finish the underpinning. Nic even hammered a piece of rebar into the mountain stone earning him the title "Hammer Man". Had a great picnic dinner with Gertrude. She is thanking God for us making her house look prettier." |
| Group Eleven -
Jim Beckmann, Anne Ballentine, Talia Dacquisto, Mitch Yurkowitz, Makala Demet, Alex Dettinger, Sarah Potter |
| |
"Despite a rainy wet day and a long power outage, our group showed amazing resilience. We made some progress on the underpinning & porch stairs and we continued to bond with our family. We also filled 2 truckloads full of work debris. It was a perfect day."

"It rained a lot today. A lot. Jeff stayed on the roof all day in the storm. We left a little early after a visit from Bob C, Taylor W and Sam A. All in all, we got nothing really accomplished because of the storm. We hope to finish tomorrow." Editor's note: Their day was slightly more exciting than indicated here but that's a story for another day. Or perhaps for the 7:30 pm, Aug. 3 ASP Reunion evening to which you, my dear stockholder, are invited.
