ASP Update #2--Sunday, July 17
Greetings!

I hope you enjoyed yesterday's news from our travelers.  If this is the first email you are receiving, it may be that your email from yesterday bounced back and the address needed to be corrected.  Sometimes the spirit is willing but the fingers are not!  I will re-route the July 16th email to you separately.

On the Road Again
The ASPers experienced a beautiful start to their day at The University of Kentucky's Arboretum.  Even traveling through some heavy rain later in the morning couldn't deter them from making the traditional stop at a Wal-Mart for final necessities and the usual impulse purchases. (Giant green ball and beef jerky, anyone?) Everyone is settling in to the center in Jeff, Kentucky which is located in Perry County.

About the Accomodations
The group's home base for this week has an interesting history. Formerly an abandoned high school, the facility later housed a middle school before being purchased by the local coal mining company.  Now used partly for company offices, the second part of the building still has classrooms and a cafeteria.  An addition to the building houses the band room which is where some of the group is bunking.   The wallpaper in the room is "vintage" in the very worst sense of the word.  You'll remember from Saturday's email that the building is air-conditioned (hurray!) but has no showers (boo!).  The showers are located in a recreation center in Hazard, the county seat, which is about 10 minutes away.  I imagine some elaborate van pooling arrangement and shower pecking order will develop over the next few days.  You and I will look forward to hearing about it.
Local Color
Eric told me today that Hazard was indeed the inspiration for the iconic TV show of my youth, Dukes of Hazzard.  Notice the difference in spelling between the series and the actual town.  Some type of litigation evidently resulted in that difference being necessary.  Eric Rose has the full scoop.  He says the area is beautiful.

The weather is in the mid to upper 80s with thunderstorms forecasted throughout the week.  It's very humid and mosquitoes are plentiful but each work group has a can of OFF to help fend them off.  An adult leader and one student from each work group ventured out tonight to check out the individual work sites and meet the families.  More on work groups tomorrow when they report in for the first time.
Here's to new adventures--
