 Thought for the Day:

The daily, inescapable reality is that in neither worship or family, are we in complete control.

This Weekend: Begin sermon series on the parables.
New and Old Wineskins
Sermon Title: "21st Century Wineskins"
Luke 5:33-39

To counter the inward, exlusive religion of the Parisees, Jesus told the parable of the old and new winskins. Old wineskins, made of goat skin, where brittle. If new wine, that was not yet fermented, was placed in old wineskins, the exanding wine would burst the skins. New wine was placed in new wineskins. The outward focused faith that Jesus lived and taught would not fit into the old legalistic wineskins that the Pharisees promoted.

For 2000 years, the church has struggled with the need to discover the new wineskins appropriate for the faith of the day. During the last 8 years of retirement, I have been consulting with churches, taught at Garrett Sminary, mentored pastors and led workshops on revitalizing declinning churches. In most churches, I have discovered a culture that either adopts to the culture around watering down the Gospel or tries to create an isolated exlusive culture separated from the world. The sermon this week will focus on four "new wineskins" needed in growing, spirit filled, 21st Century churches.

Pastor Emeritus, Dick Jones

Faithworks

Saturday July 9, 8:00 AM, Meet in Jones Narthex

We certainly would love to have you join us for FaithWorks this coming Saturday, July 9th! The Pastor's sermon Sunday was a great reminder of the main task of the church to pledge our allegiance to God! We must continue to follow Jesus' example with our commitment to the poor and down-trodden, trying to find a way to build bridges between the people of power and powerlessness. I think our out-reach mission is the perfect way for us to continue to be in Christian ministry on a regular basis. Think about whether you would like to dig in at United Methodist Children's Services, Northcott, Repairer's of the Breach, or make lunches for the Joy House. All are very worthy causes!  We will gather for breakfast and devotions at 8am. Hope to see you there!

HOLLY MORSE was the recipient of the WI Annual Conference Thelma W. Gregg Award for Christian Commitment in tireless promotion ofmissionary outreach through the church.  Pick up a copy of the article distributed to Annual Conference members about Holly and the FaithWorks ministry. Holly's award will be celebrated September 18.
