 Thought for the Day:

What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of life to lay aside his crown for my soul.

Courage and Humility

Matthew 21.1-11

Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week is a grand celebration.  It is a day when we smile as children sing 'Hosanna' and wave their palm branches as they surround Jesus and the donkey.

It is also a really good day to think about what Jesus was trying to teach us.  As I read the story of this day I am struck by both Jesus courage and his humility.  Jesus has tremendous courage to leave the quiet of Galilee to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover.  Jesus also knows that his message of love has been threatening to the religious authorities.  Coming to Jerusalem could result in confrontation an even death.  But Jesus has the courage to face what is ahead and makes his way to the city.

He also reminds us that he is a servant leader.  He asks the disciples to find a donkey, a colt to ride on.  A donkey is a sign of humility.

What does this say for our lives?  How do our lives reflect both the courage and humility of Jesus?  Come and join us this weekend as we celebrate Jesus' triumphal entry into the city and we begin the holiest of all weeks.

Palms will be distributed.  There will be both strip palms and fuller palm branches.  Directions for palm crosses will be available in the church office.  Also, remember that Mr. Ed, our favorite donkey will be with us and available to be greeted before and after all the worship services.  Bring your camera.

See you in worship this weekend.

Pastor Susan

There also have been 10,000 postcards mailed out to our neighborhoods inviting them to Holy Week services.  Keep this in the back of your mind as your neighbors may ask you about our church because of this special mailing.

We will welcome them back to Milwaukee as their flight arrives at 8:00 PM.  We will leave as a group from the church at 7:00 PM.

 THIS Saturday, April 16

7:30 - 9:00 AM, Fellowship Hall

Tom Sapinski and Bill Crise will discuss the Passion Play they saw in Oberammergau, Germany, last June and the trip surrounding it. How fitting that they will describe the depiction of Holy Week right as Holy Week starts.

A familiar story told in dramatic new ways.  They'll tell what they saw and the emotional response it generated.  Don't be afraid of sitting through a long slide show since they could not take photos of the play.  But they want to give you a sense of the history of this production in a unique Bavarian village, given as a thank offering to God.  They will have a "show and tell / souvenir" table for the interested to browse.  Join us on our Holy Week journey together.
