Thought for the Day:

The contemplative [prayerful] life is always calling us back to our beginnings, always forcing us to the root, always reminding us of our foundation.

Oct. 9 & 10: Jesus PRAYS
Matthew 6:5-6
Saturday at 5:00 pm
Sunday at 8:00, 9:00, and 10:30 am

There are 32 occasions in which the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John speak of Jesus praying.  Prayer is a central aspect of Jesus' life and ministry.  There are times when Jesus prays alone, when he offers praise for those who pray with persistence, when he prays in the presence of others and when he prays with very simple words.  In each of those circumstances, we learn something about Jesus' prayer life and how we can enter into a prayer life for ourselves.

This weekend during worship, particularly during the 8 am and 10:30 am services, we will experience a taste of Taize prayer, or contemplative prayer.  We will take time to hear scripture, to sing music that invites us into prayer and a time for silent prayer. The message this weekend will focus on Jesus PRAYS and how we can be like him through our prayer. We will take some time this weekend to quiet ourselves from the busyness and chaos of our lives to ground ourselves in God.  Jesus knew how important this was for his own life.  Many of us know how important it is for our lives as well.  In addition to Taize, or contemplative prayer, we will also enter into intercessory prayer and share in the Lord's Prayer. There will be a time for anointing at 10:30 am and individual prayer at the rail for the other services.

The worship team from our monthly Taize Prayer Services will be with us at 8 and 10:30 am.  As is the tradition, they and the Chancel Choir will be in the choir loft at the 10:30 service.

I am looking forward to worship this weekend.  I hope that you will be in town and joining us.  Remember that one of the most caring acts you can do is to invite someone to join you in worship.  Take a moment to invite someone to come with you.

See you in worship!

"Our Daily Bread" jars- Pick one up today!

As part of our World Communion Sunday celebration, we have asked folks to take home an "Our Daily Bread" jar. In the next two weeks, instead of going out to eat, stay home. Take the money you would otherwise spend and place it in your "Our Daily Bread" jar.

Bring your jar back on October 17 when we will collect all of our offerings and talk about Jesus building up treasure in heaven. All funds raised will support our Feed My Starving Children mobile packing event April 28-30, 2011.

Pick up your jars at the entrance of the sanctuary, in the Jones Narthex, or at the Danbury entrance, and bring them back on Oct. 17!
