Oct. 2 & 3: Jesus Spreads the Word
Mathew 4:18-22
Saturday at 5:00 pm
Sunday at 8:00, 9:00, and 10:30 am

Stephen Covey encourages each of us to have a mission statement for our lives.  Jesus had a mission statement for his life.  He took his statement from the prophet Isaiah.  Jesus proclaimed this mission in his home synagogue in Nazareth.  Jesus said
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4.18-19

This weekend we are going to take a look at Jesus calling the disciples and each of us to share in this mission.  One way we will look at participating in Jesus' mission is through Feed My Starving Children.  As a congregation, we have made a decision to host a Mobile Pack Event April 28, 29, 30 where we will pack a minimum of 100,000 meals for starving children around the world.  This is event is one of three major, all-church events.  We will encourage you to participate and to invite others to join you and your families.

It is also World Communion Weekend.  It is a time when we share with Christians all over the world to share in the sacrament of holy communion.  We will do this in a special way at the 5pm and 9 am services by having a U2Charist featuring the music of Bono and U2 which will focus on Christ spreading the word to those in need.  At 8 and 10:30, our traditional services will feature a full, sung communion service.  There will be music highlighted from many different countries in these services. In our United Methodist tradition, all (regardless of denominational affiliation) are invited to share in the sacrament of holy communion.

It is a wonderful, wonderful weekend to invite someone to join you in worship and practice the habit of spreading the word.  I also want to encourage you to take note of other articles in e-joy that speak in more details regarding the U2Charist services, Feed My Starving Children,
and Our Daily Bread jars.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend.  I hope you will take a moment to invite someone to come with you.

See you in worship!

Pastor Susan

"Our Daily Bread" jars- Pick one up Sunday!

As part of our World Communion Sunday celebration, we will be distributing "Our Daily Bread" jars. In the next two weeks, instead of going out to eat, stay home. Take the money you would otherwise spend and place it in a "Our Daily Bread" jar.

Bring your jar back on October 17 when we will talk about Jesus building up treasure in heaven. All funds raised will support our Feed My Starving Children mobile packing event April 28-30.

Pick up your jars at the various exits around church, and bring them back on Oct. 17!

Saturday 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am

To Celebrate World Communion Sunday, the United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay will offer its fourth annual U2 Eucharist at  5:00 October 2nd and 9:00 October 3rd.  This U2 Eucharist will feature music from U2's catalog, including such favorites as Where the Streets Have No Name, Yaweh, Pride (In the Name of Love), Beautiful Day, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and One.

The U2 Eucharist has received international media attention   for its innovative use of the band's biblically rich lyrics and social justice message, for its ability to bring together people of many different generations in a context of worship, and as a tool for raising awareness and empowering communities to respond to  world hunger.

 New Study Begins!
Dialogue Class will begin reading and discussing "The Secret Message of Jesus" by Brian D. McLaren on Oct 3.

This book takes a fresh look at the message of the gospel and the life of Christ, wondering if we might have misinterpreted the good news. What if Jesus meant for the lives of his followers to be completely different? What if we've barely scratched the surface of his teachings and instructions? What if rather than continue to seek and experience, we prefer to intellectualize and theorize from a safe distance?

Dialogue meets at 9:00 in the Wesley Room. All are welcome. Please join us in an open and respectful Dialogue about Jesus' message in today's world.
