Volunteer with Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation: Located in Lake Cormorant, Wildlife Rehabilitation is is the only state-licensed facility for wildlife rehabilitation in Northern Mississippi. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving the following Mississippi counties: Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Itawamba, LaFayette, Lee, Lowndes, Marshall, Oktibbeha, Panola, Prentiss, Tallahatchie, Tishomingo, Warren, and Yalobusha. The goals of Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation are:
- Successfully nurture, rehabilitate and release injured or orphaned indigenous wildlife
- Educate the local community in environmental, conservation and habitat destruction issues as well as for the appreciation and regard for man's interaction with nature
- Provide information & assistance to the public - free of charge - for the care of injured, orphaned, sick or displaced wildlife
There are a number of ways to volunteer and support this organization. You can use your skills to help:

... and more! MWR needs people to do more than just feed the animals, we need skills from many different vocations... We can use yours! Whether building new cages or aviaries, teaching wildlife conservation to children, designing web pages or organizing fundraisers, MWR can use your help! Donate your time to save the animals, or join Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc. as an Annual or Sustaining Member. MWR volunteers attend training courses and seminars to acquire the specialized skills necessary to give these creatures the best care possible. Many local veterinarians volunteer their time and expertise to help with the medications, x-rays and surgical procedures.

Volunteer Spotlight

This month's volunteer spotlight is TAYLOR GRANT, a junior at Horn Lake High School. She is a
3rd year member of the Horn Lake Mayor's Youth Leadership Council and plans to attend Mississippi State University upon graduation. Taylor was a stand-out volunteer at this year's Earth Day event on the square in Hernando on April 21. She was eager and willing to help with any task that was given to her and proved herself to be a great leader with tremendous people skills! Taylor gladly stepped into the role of Sam E. Soil and assisted with several booths that day.Congratulations Taylor! Your hard work is appreciated!

Thank you for being a part of Volunteer Northwest Mississippi. We are excited to be the only volunteer center in northwest Mississippi. In this issue, we will provide information on our next training to be held May 29, highlight successful events completed in April, and look ahead to events coming up in May. As always, upcoming volunteer opportunities are featured at the bottom of this newsletter and an opportunity spotlight can be found in the left column. The Awards Banquet is May 1, 2012 at the Gale Center, 2601 Elm Street, Hernando, Mississippi and it begins at 6:00PM.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Linell Fromm has spent her career in nonprofits, education and cause-related work. She gained substantial experience as a nonprofit executive managing health and human service organizations. She has also worked as a college instructor and public administrator. As a business woman, she provided grantwriting and program evaluation to local governments around the country. Linell was instrumental in helping clients win over $150 million in competitive grants. Dr. Fromm also conducted organizational reviews, capacity building training, large group facilitation, curriculum development, and more. Today, Dr. Fromm serves as executive director of the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits, a 20+ year old statewide organization with 320 members, committed to ensuring that Mississippi nonprofit agencies are effectively managed and sustained, and serving the needs of clients to the best of their ability. It is the Center's vision that "all nonprofits meet their highest level of success." The Center's highly-regarded capacity building program, Excellence in Action, provides education and training to help agency staff and board members better serve clients in an efficient and transparent manner. Dr. Fromm, a Miami Beach native, is especially proud of her international volunteer work.. As a Fulbright Scholar to Ukraine, Linell taught eager students with interests in local government administration, public health and philanthropy at universities throughout the country. While overseas she also worked with teams to establish job training centers and libraries, and identify public-private partnership opportunities. Her work has taken her from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and South Sudan, to Belarus and Sri Lanka. Dr. Fromm, a certified fund raising executive (CFRE), received her doctorate (EdD) in leadership from the University of San Diego; a master of public health (MPH) from the University of California Berkeley; a master of public administration (MPA) from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government; and a master in library science (MLS) from the University of South Florida.

Thank you Tonja and Jimmy Caldwell for an outstanding training on April 26! Attendants of the training learned about developing a sustainable nonprofit and made worthwhile community connections with other attendees. Some of the great groups represented at the training include House of Grace, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc., Springhill Historice Memorial Cemetery, Opals Barn, Hernando Parks, Desoto Health and Wellness Center, Desoto Family Theater, Young Ladies Today, and the Ida B. Wells Museum. VNM looks forward to establishing and maintaining a relationship with each of these organizations in the future. Clean Up Volunteer Opportunity with Springhill Cemetery:
Volunteers are needed to help with weed and brush control, planting and tombstone maintenance at Springhill Cemetery.

Volunteers needed at the Food Pantry in Walls on Mondays and Fridays only:
Food Pantry Volunteers are needed at the Walls Catholic Social Services, a program of Sacred Heart Southern Missions. Volunteers are needed to greet clients, answer the phones, pull files, bag food, and other tasks as needed. Volunteers are needed on Mondays and Fridays only from 9-12 and 1-3. Administrative Volunteers with Baptist Homecare and North Mississippi Hospice: Volunteers may assist the hospice team with special projects and events, such as staffing booths at health fairs, assisting with memorial service preparations and activities, assisting with community education and speaking events. Administrative Volunteers provide office support by assembling mailings, typing, filing, copying, and data entry. Volunteers needed to help in Community Garden, Monday evenings: Studies show that children need frequent connections with nature and the outdoors as part of their healthy growth and development. Hernando Hills Elementary students and parents are welcome to to get their hands dirty weeding, watering, and eventually picking the Community Garden on "Messy Mondays" from 4:00-6:00PM beginning May 7, 2012. Seniors in Action Meeting: For Seniors 55+ who are interested in fun and volunteering. Group meets 4th Thursdays at the M. R. Dye Public Library at 10:30 am. Volunteer projects are announced on meeting days. Contact Jesse Pool, Head Librarian, (662) 393-5654 for more information.
North Mississippi Hospice seeking volunteers North Mississippi Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers to volunteer within their office, in a facility or patient's home or offer support from your own home. Volunteer training is provided. Contact Holly Boyd at 662-620-1050.
Library Book Shelvers Needed: Volunteers will assist with organization and accurate arrangement of library materials in the Library, which includes shelving, retrieving, shifting, weeding, or discarding library materials as directed. Training will be provided.
Successful volunteers will be able to concentrate and apply knowledge of alphabet and numbers to library filing systems.
Volunteers should be able to do stretching, bending, and lifting tasks associated with shelving materials on the upper and lower shelves.
