The Timing of Senator Brown's Abuse Disclosure Is Up to Nobody Else But Him
an editorial by Kim Thomas and Laura Hennessey Martens
*This editorial was printed in several local newspapers within New Hope's service area
Since the news about Senator Scott Brown's childhood sexual, physical and psychological abuse broke, public reactions to the Senator's revelations have run the gamut from shock to support to cautious criticism. While many, including Senate colleagues, journalists and those of us who provide sexual and domestic violence services have lauded his disclosure, others have questioned his timing and intentions, suggesting that the "exposé" is curiously timed as the Senator's memoir titled Against All Odds hits the bookshelves and his impending re-election awaits.
For those who may be speculating "Why now?" or "Is he using this disclosure to sell his book or gain sympathy votes for re-election?", we provide this simple caution: it is always the right of the victim to determine the time, manner, or even whether or not to disclose the abuse they have suffered. As a survivor of abuse, it is up to no one else but Senator Brown whether he chose to disclose his abuse now, earlier in his life, on his deathbed, or never at all. Who are we to judge when it is "best" for a survivor to disclose his or her abuse?
