Domestic Violence and The Super Bowl

Claims that domestic violence escalates on Super Bowl Sunday have been vigorously challenged and currently no hard evidence links the two.

The National Bureau of Economics released a working paper which found that losses in professional football games - specifically when the home team suffers an upset - can lead to an 8% spike in the number of police reports of spousal abuse within a short time of the game.

Parties surrounding sporting events do provide you with a prime opportunity to talk to your friends and family about domestic and sexual violence.

Governor Patrick Signed Sexual Assault / Harassment Restraining Order LawDeval Patrick

The "Act to Prevent Harassment" - better known as the sexual assault/harassment restraining order bill - is now law. The bill was enacted by both the House and Senate and signed by Governor Patrick on Thursday, February 9th, 2010.

The law creates a criminally enforceable civil restraining order for victims of sexual assault and stalking in Massachusetts, closing a gap in a critical source of protection for these victims.

We applaud the Governor, Lt. Governor, leadership of the bill sponsors, Senator Harriet Chandler and Representative Corey Atkins, longtime supporter Representative Peter Koutoujian, and many House and Senate members who worked to make sure that victims have access to a proven effective tool to help prevent harassment and ensure their safety.
New Hope Recognized for National Grant

New Hope was recently acknowledged by the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance for being the only agency in the state awarded a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime for their "National Crime Victims Rights Week Community Awareness Project."

This grant supports initiatives across the nation designed to enhance the general public's awareness of crime victims' rights and services, focusing on this year's theme, "Crime Victims' Rights: Fairness. Dignity. Respect."

This initiative has enhanced the ability of more than 350 communities throughout the United States to raise awareness about victims' rights and services among the general public.

National Crime Victims Rights Week is April 18th - April 24th, 2010. New Hope will recognize this week by placing inserts in two local papers that highlight the services provided to crime victims by New Hope and will also be displaying the Clothesline Project in those communities.
