Play It Forward Up2Us Calls on Youth Sports Organizations to Serve on MLK Day 2009

On January 19th 2009, communities and nonprofits across the country are gearing up for a record number
of volunteers on the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal holiday. Up2Us is calling on youth sports organizations to get involved in this national day of service. Up2Us has a goal to inspire 100,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers to serve through sports on MLK Day 2009.

Up2Us Member Spotlight: How Up2Us Members Are Playing It Forward on MLK Day 2009
|
On Monday,
January 19th 2009, Youth Enrichment Services (YES) will celebrate
the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by honoring outstanding youth
and community leaders at the 3rd annual MLK "Going to the Mountain
Day." A brunch will be held at the
John Hancock Hall in Boston and the keynote speaker will be former NBA player Dana Barros. Immediately following
the brunch, YES will take more than 150 Boston youth,
families, and volunteers to Pats
Peak's "Diversity
Day" in Lincoln, NH for a fun day of skiing, snowboarding,
and snow tubing. YES anticipates that approximately 200 YES volunteers, family
members, friends, corporate, civic leaders, and community residents will attend
and serve through sports on MLK 2009.

Up2Us Member Spotlight: Waynesville School District Plans MLK Event
|
 
Waynesville School District, AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, and Partners in
Education (PIE) are teaming up for a MLK "Souptacular" Celebration from January
19th 2009 through January 30th 2009 in Waynesville, Missouri. The days of service begin with healthy
snacks being served at lunch in all Waynesville schools to celebrate Martin
Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and to launch the soup drive. MLK Day 2009 and the "Souptacular" will be
connected with the upcoming NFL Super Bowl. Donation boxes for soup collection have been set up all
over the local Waynesville community which includes all Waynesville Schools, Wal-Mart, Price
Cutters, and Ft. Leonard Wood Commissary.
On
January 30th 2009, all students and staff will wear their favorite
NFL team colors and jerseys. All soup collected will be donated for the
"Snack in a Pack" program at the local food pantry in Waynesville.
