On January 19th 2009, communities and nonprofits across the country are gearing up for a record number of volunteers on the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal holiday. Up2Us is calling on youth sports organizations to get involved in this national day of service. Up2Us has a goal to inspire 100,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers to serve through sports on MLK Day 2009.

How Up2Us Members Are Playing It Forward on MLK Day 2009

On Monday, January 19th 2009, Tenacity will honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. by working with 8th graders on their high school applications during the After School Excellence Program. Students will spend the afternoon hours demonstrating their dedication to education by working on high school admissions essays. Students will work with Tenacity staff and volunteers to put together strong applications in an effort improve the chances of getting into the top high schools in Boston. Tenacity believes there is no better way to exemplify the message and vision of Martin Luther King Jr., than by guiding students through the process of opening doors to quality education.

E3Sports Plans 'Service Through Sports' Event in New York City

On Monday, January 19th 2009, E3Sports will celebrate MLK Day 2009 and lead a day of service with the students of PS 158 in New York City. 50 students along with volunteers from E3Sports will be painting a mural on a wall in the schoolyard of PS 158. E3Sports will lead a warm-up for all students and play interactive sports games that celebrate the concepts that Martin Luther King Jr. believed in such as teamwork, respect, community, empowerment, and tolerance.
