ALUMNI SNAPSHOTS
In this issue we share the exciting news about a very generous bequest. Thanks to Willard and Ethel Vaughan, Thetford Academy is $1.2 million richer!
We once again offer the column titled Alumni Faces to reconnect you with classmates, friends of old, and alumni to be. Panther Pairings continues with Panther Cubs as a sidebar to keep you abreast of the latest news of alumni weddings and births. Upcoming Events offers a look at exciting chances to experience life at TA. In Memoriam pays tribute to some of our departed alumni.
Reunion Updates offers a peek at some of the many classes who have recently spent time together. If your class isn't included, perhaps this will provide the inspiration to start planning! The Alumni Bio column in this edition features a graduate from the Class of 1989, Sarah Tilden. She has filled the empty space in her house by providing a temporary home for foster babies, and her nurturing skills continue to enhance the lives of many. You can still name the seat of your choice. Personalized seat plaques are available in the Martha Jane Rich Theater and the Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium. Choose yours today, while there are still seats available.! As always, you can test your campus knowledge with TA Trivia. We always are interested in hearing from alumni with stories to tell for our Alumni Bio column, and please share your wedding and baby news with us. Finally, we end this issue with a fitting photo of Martha Jane Rich, as she celebrates her retirement after 20 years at Thetford Academy. Our hearts go with you, Martha. TA RECEIVES 1.2 MILLION DOLLAR BEQUEST
|
Thetford Academy has received a bequest of $1.2 million from the late alumnus Willard Vaughan and his wife Ethel, the largest gift in TA's 193 year history. "We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of so many faithful alums, but this gift is extraordinary, " said Torrelee Fisher-Sass, the outgoing Head of School. "We are deeply grateful to Willard and Ethel for their long standing commitment to our school. Thetford Academy strives to help each of our students reach his or her highest potential and to foster lifelong friendships and an appreciation for community and place. The Vaughans' generous gift will enrich the student experience at the Academy for generations to come."

The Class of 1925, including Willard Vaughan, fourth from left.
Willard Vaughan was born in Thetford and graduated from TA as one of the six members of the Class of 1925. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan lived in Guildhall, Vermont, while Mr. Vaughan worked as a foreman and envelope specialist at Groveton Paper Company for eighteen years. According to Russell Vaughan '56, his Uncle Willard never wanted to stay on the family farm.
The Vaughans' generous gift doubles the size of TA's endowment fund, which is used to support academic programs at the school, to fund campus improvements, to provide seed money for new initiatives, and to offset tuition through support of the annual operating budget. In addition, a portion of the bequest will be used to match donations to TA's current capital campaign. This campaign, now in its final stage, made possible the recent renovations to the Daniels Science Building and Anderson Hall, the construction of the Martha Jane Rich Theater, and the new Vaughan Alumni Gymnasium (named in honor of Janet Kendall Vaughan '53 and Robert Vaughan '53, also a nephew of Willard Vaughan).

ALUMNI BIO: SARAH TILDEN '89 |
Sarah Tilden '89 and one of her foster babies visited the Alumni Office at TA.
After graduating from Thetford Academy in 1989, Sarah Tilden spent nearly a decade providing care for infants at La Petite Creche in Hanover, NH. She then joined the family business for a couple of years and eventually settled in Springfield, VT, where she has lived for the past six years. Her son Benjamin was nine when her second child Harrison entered the world. Says Sarah, "As Harrison approached his tenth birthday and big brother Ben graduated from high school, I must have been bitten by the baby 'bug' again, because my home is blessed with the pitter patter of tiny feet and mounds of tiny laundry once again, but this time in a very different way."
Her solution to fill the empty bedroom was to secure a license to do foster care. She signed up to be an emergency placement, which means taking in a child on short-notice for a period of up to 30 days while an investigation is completed or more permanent arrangements can be made.
Continues Sarah, "In February of this year I welcomed a foster child in to our home and hearts. She stayed with us for thirteen glorious days. She was reunited with her family on a Thursday morning; and before I even had time to miss her, I was asked if I would consider caring for a newborn. The call came that Thursday afternoon. After some thought, I agreed to the request and then was told
'the baby will most likely be discharged from the hospital tomorrow afternoon.' Baby H and his mom spent a month as part of our family before transitioning to a more permanent situation."
Twelve month old "Casey" was welcomed into Sarah's home just before Baby H and his mom moved on. Two year old "William" followed shortly.
Sarah says all of these children have been a beautiful blessing to her family and have enriched their lives with their resiliency and love during their brief stays. "I have found this new 'hobby' to be extremely fulfilling and would encourage others to learn more about providing a temporary home for a child in need."
