ALUMNI SNAPSHOTS
In this issue we offer a review of the reunions held this summer. Seven separate classes celebrated together, and the annual Alumni Day was a wonderful success--one of the attendees graduated in 1930! For you to enjoy is a new column titled Alumni Faces, and "Panther Pairings" joins "Panther Cubs" as a sidebar. Additionally, Track Coach Emily Silver provides us with a comprehensive update on the many outstanding performances of track and field athletes who have worn panther blue.
As always, you can test your campus knowledge with TA Trivia. We're looking for more volunteers, too. If you're in town on October 1, we can use your help at the Woods Trail Run, and we always are interested in hearing from alumni with stories to tell for our Alumni Bio column. Also, please share your wedding and baby news with us. | REUNION 2011 UPDATE | |
Summer 2011 was a great time for a TA reunion, and seven classes took the opportunity to get together and share old times and new news. The Class of 1961, the 50 year class, enjoyed a lunch at Pearl Austin Keene's house in Corinth, VT, and then joined the celebration at the Alumni Banquet at TA. They were joined in the Café in Anderson Hall by members of the Class of 1981, who shared an afternoon at Tim and Raelyn Ulman's house in Thetford Center. The Class of 1986 reminisced at TA on Alumni Day, too. Margaret Kinsman Wachs, a member of the Class of 1930, was an honored guest at the banquet and was joined by folks from many classes. Alumni and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening complete with social hour, Chinese auction, and dinner; and many stayed to dance the night away to the music of the Odell Walker Band.

The Class of 1971 enjoyed a laugh-filled afternoon in the Alumni Room, then toured the new facilities before joining the group at the banquet.

Folks from the Class of 1963 got together in July at the Union Village Dam to enjoy each other's company and plan their next reunion. On July 2, the Class of 2001 spent an afternoon at TA on the quad and had a great barbeque meal while catching up on all the news.

The Class of 1991 waited until a beautiful day in August to spend time together. Ten classmates and family members spent the day on the TA quad and were joined by Art and Marina LaPierre, whose late son Donald was a much loved member of the class, and former teachers Fred Tefft, Art Sharkey, and Robin Pettingell. Before they dispersed at the end of the day, plans were already in the works for their next reunion. Love that TA spirit!

Thanks to an initiative made by current throwing coach Scott
Chapman, past and present TA Track & Field coaches researched results to update school records, a task that had not been done since 2002!
Below the current records, you will see some 2002-2011 history. If you were on the team during those years, take a close look, because you may have had a record and not even known it.

GIRLS 4x800m: The record set by Lisa Frost '03, Morgan Bemis '04, Elizabeth Waste '03, and Lela Schlenker '04 stood for nine years. The girls set it back in 2002 when they ran a 10:33.72, but this past season a new team broke it by less than a second, running a 10:33.12: Maggie Pomeroy '14, Maddison Wilhite '13, Arianna MacKinnon '13, and Eliza Hoffman '13.
GIRLS 4x100m: Madi Arnold '05, Estella Young '07, Chelsea Williams '07, and Zoë Sirjane '08 have held the current record of 54.86 since 2005. To earn that, they broke the 56.0 mark set in 2002 by Lauren Fifield '04, Jen Slack '03, Maria Ciambra '04, and Lila Gendel '04.
GIRLS JAVELIN: Javelin is just one of the records held by Hazel Wood '08. Her mark of 95'4" replaced Danielle Bragg '96's ten-year-long record of 93'0" set in 1995.
GIRLS POLE VAULT: Hazel Wood '08 was the first to hold this record, and no one has bested her vault of 8 feet.
GIRLS HIGH JUMP: For an impressive TWENTY YEARS Jen Miller '89's jump of 4' 10" stood as TA's school record. That was back in 1988, before Hazel Wood '08 was even born. In 2008, Hazel's jump of 5' 0" replaced Jen's longtime record.
GIRLS TRIPLE JUMP: Hazel Wood '08 holds this record, too. Her 2008 hop, skip, and jump of 30' 7" replaced Kate Fuller '99's mark of 29' 7.5". Kate held this record for eleven years, having set it in 1997.
GIRLS DECATHLON: Like the pole vault, Hazel Wood '08 was the first to hold this record...as far as we know. She completed a decathlon in 2008, but the amount of
points she earned is still being confirmed. Please contact us if you know something we don't!
BOYS 100m: Scott Hodgdon '97 held his record of 11.41 for sixteen years, having set it in 1995! Ian Weider '13 broke it this year with a 11.37.
BOYS 110m Hurdles: Thomas McCosker '04 held his 2002 record of 18.7 until Ian McDaniels '07 broke it with a 17.41 in 2006. Ian broke his own record in 2007 with a 16.58, but Jesse Chapman '08 replaced it in 2008 with a 16.06. Then came Ethan Chapman '11, who broke the 16 second barrier in 2010 with a 15.98, only to break it
and set a Division III record in 2011 with a 15.40.
BOYS 200m: Again, Scott Hodgdon '97 held his 1995 record for sixteen years, and once again it was Ian Weider '13 who broke it. Scott's 200 record was 23.97, and Ian's new one is 23.67, set in 2011.
BOYS 300m Hurdles: John Milanese '00 held his record of 44.12 until a string of boys broke it, starting in 2006 with Ian McDaniels '07 who ran a 42.24 in 2007. Then came Jacob Mott '09 who broke the record with a 42.20 in 2008. Jacob's record stood for two years until Ethan Chapman '11 set a new TA and Division III one this 2011 season with a 41.65.
BOYS 400m: Jesse Taylor-Waldman '03 set a mark that stood for nine years: a handtimed 52.9. In the track world, a hand-timed mark gets converted to an electronic markby adding .24 seconds, so when Satchel Arnold '11 ran a 52.97 this 2011 season, timed electronically, he got his name on the TA record board.
BOYS 3000m: Jimmy LaBelle '11 blew away Sam Perry's 2001 mark of 9:44.9 this season with a 9:22.70. Sam was Class of 2001 and held his record for ten years!
BOYS 3200m: Jimmy LaBelle '11 is the new record holder in this event, too. His 9:55.85 set this past 2011 season replaced his own school record of 10:35.11 set in 2009. Before Jimmy came along, Jim Solger '94 held his record of 10:36 for 15 years!!! Jim Solger set his 3200m record way back in 1994!
BOYS 4x100m: The mark set this past 2011 season by Henry Levine '13, Connor Cook '14, Dominic Chatot '13, and Ian Weider '13 replaces a record that stood for
four years. In 2007, Ian McDaniels '07, Adam Pluta '09, Ben Rokes '08, and J.B. Snelling '09 set a record of 46.92. Until 2002, that record had been held by John
Wilmot '03, Justin LeBlanc '03, Jesse Taylor-Waldman '03, and Chris Grant '03. Those guys had run a 47.26.
BOYS 4x400m: In 2010, Sam Williams '10, Micah Munro '10, Gabe Freund '12, and Ethan Chapman '11 set a mark of 3:41.56, replacing a record of 3:45.3 that had stood since 2002 by four other boys, some of whose names will look familiar by now: Jesse
Taylor-Waldman '03, Chris Grant '03, Justin LeBlanc '03, and West Wilson '03.
BOYS DISCUS: Jesse Chapman '08 holds an impressive four school records. His discus mark of 143' 9" set in 2008 replaced Dale Schaafsma '00's 122' 0", a TA and
Division III record set in 2000.
BOYS SHOT PUT: Dale Schaafsma '00 also held this record for eight years. His mark of 39' 3.75" set in 2000 stood until Jesse Chapman '08 came along. Jesse broke his own record for a few years until his final year's throw of 48' 3.5" in 2008 became the one
to stick in the record books. Jesse's TA record also stands as the Division III record.
BOYS JAVELIN: Mitchell Wenz '02 set a TA record with his 2002 throw of 141' 6". That stood for five years until Matt Longwell '07 broke it with a 159' 11" in 2007. Jesse Chapman '08, however, claimed the new record in 2008 with his mark of 163' 0", which also stands as the Division III record.
BOYS HIGH JUMP: While Jesse Taylor-Waldman '03's three sprinting records have fallen since 2002, his high jump record of 5' 10" still stands. It's just that now he has the company of Thomas McCusker '04 and Tyler Murdoch '07, both of whom also jumped 5' 10": Thomas in 2004 and Tyler in 2007.
BOYS LONG JUMP: Scott Hodgdon '97 held the long jump record for an impressive NINETEEN years with his 1996 mark of 18' 7". Matt Longwell '07 broke Scott's record in 2005 with a jump of 18' 7.5", and went on to jump his all-time best of 20' 6.75" in 2007.
BOYS TRIPLE JUMP: Paul Wilmot '00 held the triple jump record with a 36' 10" until Matt Longwell '07 came around. In 2006 Matt broke the record with a 36' 11.5", but went on to set a new TA record in 2007 with a 41'2.5".
BOYS DECATHLON: Earning 5280 points in 2007 and finishing second across all divisions in the state, Matt Longwell '07 was the first to hold this TA record. In 2008, however, Jesse Chapman '08 surpassed it, earning 5578 points en route to becoming the state champion. |
