FOUNDERS' DAY 2011
|
The 67th annual celebration of Founders' Day was held on February 4. The theme this year was Literature, and classes had fun depicting everything from fairy tales to science fiction.
The day started in the gymnasium with the traditional candle lighting ceremony.

Mother Nature cooperated and provided the students with plenty of material with which to construct their snow sculptures on the quad. . .

and a gorgeous day for the outdoor games.
Honored guests at the all school banquet included alumni, retired faculty, trustees, and parent volunteers. The meal included salad, rolls, and macaroni and cheese. . .
and, of course, cake!!

REMEMBERING ROBERT BACON
February 12, 1921-November 8, 2010
|

Long time faculty member Robert Bacon graduated from Thetford Academy in 1939 and earned his BA at Syracuse University and a Masters of Education at the UVM. After serving for three years in the US Army Air Corps, he began his long career as a professional educator at TA. During his forty years at TA, Mr. Bacon taught science, mathematics, and drivers' education, and for a time served as assistant principal.
Mr. Bacon retired in 1986, but his interest in TA remained strong. He was a mainstay of the Thetford Academy Alumni Association (TAAA) and for many years was the archivist.
Rest in peace, Mr. Bacon. You are missed.

ALUMNI BIOS: CHARLOTTE WIENCKE VARNEY and GIL VARNEY |
Gil and Charlotte Varney and sons Gregory and Jacob
Charlotte Wiencke Varney grew up in Thetford and graduated with the Thetford Academy Class of 1983. She remembers her time fondly, " Some of my favorite teachers at TA were Mrs. Rump in English, Mr. Brandt in 7th and 8th grade social studies." Her husband, Gil Varney, Jr., the son of two TA alumni, g raduated with the Class of 1980. Charlotte continued her education at St. Olaf College and graduated in 1987. After moving from Thetford to Fairlee in 5th grade, Gil "...rejoined many of my old friends from Thetford and Strafford at TA" in 8th grade. Of his time at TA, Gil says, " I enjoyed several of the teachers - particularly Mr. Crossett in physics, trigonometry, and calculus - I think we drove him a bit crazy at times!... I enjoyed trips to Germany (junior year) and England/Scotland (senior year)." Gil graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1984. Charlotte and Gil were married in August 1989. Gil joined the Army in 1985, and in 1986 he spent a year learning Greek at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Following a few more short courses, he was assigned to the 18th U.S. Army Field Artillery Detachment in Argyroupolis, Greece, for 13 months as an Artillery Team Leader. Of his time abroad, he says "I lived in Kilkis...and had a great time living in Greece. . .I was able to take a short trip to Turkey as well." Gil attended the Intelligence Officer Advanced Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and in 1989 made a quick trip home for his marriage to Charlotte. Gil left the Army as a captain in 1992 after serving seven years.
The couple moved to Alaska with the US Army, and after a short stint in Arizona, spent 4 winters in Fairbanks, then moved to Anchorage in 1994 where they stayed until just last summer. Gil left the army and began working for the Center for Disease Control in Anchorage. In 1996 Charlotte went back to school, looking to pursue a career in the health care field. She earned a BS in Nursing from the University of Alaska Anchorage and worked for the Anchorage Public Health Department as a public health nurse for 3 years. She specialized in tuberculosis control and the immunization program, and says "I loved the job and learned a lot from some great public health nurses."
Their first child, Gregory was born in 1999, followed by Jacob in 2003. Charlotte went back to work in 2005 as a school nurse for the Anchorage School District. She did some health teaching/health prevention as time allowed, and ran immunization clinics for H1N1 flu shots. It became very evident to her how vital school nurses are in today's health care troubles. As school nurses say, "Healthy children learn better."
Last May Gil was promoted to the IT advisor of the East Africa region for the CDC, so in early September of last year, they moved to Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to Kenya, Gil has been supporting Ethiopia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, traveling each quarter to these countries. It was a welcome change for them, "We had often talked of living overseas and giving our kids the opportunity to see and experience other cultures." GIls says, "We enjoyed spending a "winter" (it is summer here since we are in the southern hemisphere) with sunny blue skies and temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s, though it was somewhat odd having no snow for Christmas." Gil is also currently finishing a Masters Degree from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.
Charlotte is unable to get a work permit or a Kenyan nursing license, so she spends her time substituting at the boys' school health office, and helping out with social causes. They are also taking advantage of their surroundings; they have been on two safaris and plan to take the boys to the Kenyan coast during their March break.
Charlotte says, "I have returned to Thetford numerous times to visit family and friends but never made it back to TA other than driving by and admiring the outside of the school. I hope to look inside the buildings this summer when I'll be back again!" |

THE PANTHER RETURNS |

On March 8, 2011, the panther was returned to its home in the TA gym, thanks to the efforts of Peter Boyd '77 and Chip Odell '74.
When Anderson Hall was renovated, the floor was meticulously disassembled and the boards individually numbered. Peter and others, in a true blue labor of love, then put the pieces back together; and Chip added the frame.
The panther arrived just in time for the first ever basketball playoff game on our own turf. The #4 seeded boys were victorious over #13 Stowe in an action packed evening of basketball, and they advanced to the quarterfinals. TA will host #5 Enosburg on Saturday, March 12. Go Panthers!

NEW ENGLAND DRAMA FESTIVAL at THETFORD ACADEMY
|
The New England Drama Festival is now in its 70th year; and with the completion of the Martha Jane Rich Theater, on March 26 Thetford Academy will host a regional competition for the first time since the inception of the festival. There are two levels of competition which lead to an invitation to the grand finale; a school must first perform in a regional competition and then win one of two spots at the state level. If Thetford Academy students are chosen to perform at the State competition, they will travel to Springfield High School on April 8 and 9.
Ruell Barrett arrived as Headmaster of Thetford Academy in 1962 and encouraged the drama program to participate in this festival. Thetford Academy's first appearance at the regional level was in 1962 with "Revolt of Mother." TA advanced to the New England Drama Festival for the first time in 1969, with the play "The Bald Soprano." Students have been chosen to perform at the New England Drama Festival three times since, in 1995, 1998 and 2010. If successful again this year, they will travel to Andover High School in Massachusetts on April 16-18.
The Regional Vermont Drama Festivals will be held at six different schools across Vermont in March, and for the first time in 50 years of participation, Thetford Academy has the facilities to serve as host. When asked whether the students were excited about this opportunity, director Ray Chapin said "Yes, very!" At Thetford's Regional competition, five schools will be in attendance: Thetford Academy, The Sharon Academy, Long Trail School, Whitcomb High School, and Proctor High School. The theme this year is based on the Hasbro board game "Clue." Thetford will be performing "The Metamorphosis," a dramatization of Franz Kafka's famous short story, by Charles Dicenzo.
A summary of the play from the publisher describes it as follows:
Kafka's macabre tale [is] of a man who has suddenly, and unaccountably, turned into a giant cockroach. ... Thanks to the skill of the adaptor, the humor and pathos of the situation are heightened through their theatrical setting, and the irony of Gregor's plight becomes even more eloquently clear. It is not only the story of a man fallen victim to a cruel fate, but also of the pettiness and stupidity of those who should feel the deepest compassion for him.
The public is invited to attend the two community performances offered on Tuesday, March 15, and Wednesday, March 16. Both shows are at 7:00 pm in the Martha Jane Rich Theater in Anderson Hall. Tickets are $5.00 and can be reserved by contacting Gloria Thurston or Kim Dyke at (802) 785-4805 extensions 201 or 219. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
