ALUMNI SNAPSHOTS

In this issue we talk about alumna Stacy Thurston Barton '99 and her leadership of the new International Student Program. Alumna Virginia Slack Southworth '42 shares her story of life in the Upper Valley. We offer congratulatios to the Champion Cross Country Team and New England qualifiers Jimmy LaBelle and Zach Chatot.  We're looking for more volunteers, too.  We need alumni with stories to tell for our Alumni Bio column.

In our construction update, you can see that the new Martha Jane Rich Theater is up and running, having hosted three performances of "Almost, Maine." The basketball season will officially begin in the the new gymnasium with a quadruple header. We also have information about the memorial for William "Bill" Riley. Find out more about those events below.
Seats are available for purchase in the gymnasium and theater, along with window blocks from the old gym. We have discovered a surplus of past yearbooks to offer you!  And as always, you can test your campus knowledge with TA Trivia.

If you would like more information about Thetford Academy activities or to be featured in Snapshots, please contact Wendy Cole, TA Alumni Liaison, at [email protected].
NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM

Stacy BartonStacy Thurston Barton graduated with the Thetford Academy Class of 1999.  After four years at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Stacy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Economics and double minor in Education and Administrative Science.

Following college, Stacy moved to Boston where she worked briefly in investment banking before transitioning to working at Northeastern University in financial aid administration.  While at Northeastern, Stacy earned her Masters of Education.  In May 2008, Stacy moved back to the Upper Valley and accepted a position working in the Career Services Office at Dartmouth College.  Most recently, Stacy began working at Thetford Academy as a teacher of US history to 1900 and as the International Student Program Coordinator.

Stacy currently lives in Lebanon with her husband Brock and their dog Baxter.  She and her husband look forward to building a new home in East Thetford in the spring, as well as welcoming their first child in March.

The new International Student Program at TA will bring 5-8 tuition paying students to the Academy beginning in the 2011-2012 school year.  The program will eventually expand to accomodate as many as 20 international students living in home stay accomodations.

The International Student Program seeks to inject diversity into Thetford Academy by broadening the educational and cultural perspectives of our current students and community, and to invite international students to experience our solid education philosophy and expand their English language capabilities.  The Academy is very excited to embark upon this enriching new journey!

For more information about the International Student Program, please visit http://www.thetfordacademy.org/international-students/ .  Please contact Stacy at [email protected] or 802-785-4805 x 228 with questions or comments.

ALUMNA BIO   VIRGINIA SLACK SOUTHWORTH

Ginny Southworth

Virginia Slack Southworth
graduated with the Thetford Academy Class of 1942.  Ginny grew up on Pavillion Road in East Thetford, the youngest of seven children.  Her older siblings, Gertrude, Dora, Christabel, Merlin, Lillian, and Eleanor, also all attended TA; and they all walked many miles each day going to and from school.

Other than a brief time spent living in New Mexico, where she followed her sister after high school, Ginny has spent her entire life in the Upper Valley.  Ginny met her late husband Kenneth, an Oxbow alumnus, when she worked as a telephone operator in Fairlee.  She was intrigued by his voice so arranged to have his calls come to her to be put through, and the relationship developed from there.

Ginny was a guest speaker in Steve Niederhauser's "Barns, Mills, and Mountains" Class in November and kept everyone riveted with her tales of life at the Academy and in Thetford in the 30s and 40s.  After the class she enjoyed a tour of the campus as it is today.
Ginny will be an honored guest at Founders' Day 2011, a TA celebration with which she is not familiar, since she graduated with the last class to attend school in the original Academy building before it burned.  She looks forward to returning to Thetford Academy and sharing more of its history.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE    MARTHA JANE RICH THEATER and DAVID KELMAN SCENE SHOP

The TA Drama Department recently presented three performances of John Cariani's play, "Almost,
Maine", in the newly completed Martha Jane Rich Theater in Anderson Hall.  The cast performed to almost full houses at each of the showings, and patrons enjoyed the beautiful new theatrical environment.
Almost Maine
The theater will showcase student productions including our award-winning one-act plays, festivals of work by student playwrights, and choral and instrumental concerts.  It also expands our capacity to host guest speakers, films, community performances, and other original programs.

The theater is located in Anderson Hall behind the student cafe, in space which formerly housed the gym.  It currently seats an audience of 190, and there are several sections reserved for wheelchair access.

The David Kelman Scene Shop, located behind the stage, provides an unprecedented facility for set design and construction.  The Scene Shop enhances students' learning experiences both under the lights and behind the scenes.
