ALUMNI SNAPSHOTS

In this issue we offer tribute to Martha Jane Rich, who has completed her tenure as Head of School.  In our alumnus bio we offer a follow up on 2003 graduate James Harhen who was recently awarded a Purple Heart.

We bring you a new Construction Update with photographs of the gymnasium and information on how to purchase theater seats.

The Classes of 1990 and 2005 held their reunions in August. We have included photos from the celebrations, both of which enjoyed excellent turnouts and unusually fine Vermont summer weather.  Also included is a photo of members of the  Class of 2016. And as always, you can test your campus knowledge with TA Trivia.

We're looking for volunteers, too.  We're recruiting folks to help at this fall's Cross Country meets, and we need alumni with stories to tell for our Alumni Bio column.

If you would like more information about Thetford Academy activities or to be featured in Snapshots, please contact Wendy Cole, TA Alumni Liason, at Wendy.Cole@Thet.Net.
THE HEAD OF SCHOOL TRANSITION

Martha Rich
For 19 years, Martha Jane Rich has been the Head of School at Thetford Academy. On July 1, 2010, she ended her tenure as Head and assumed her new role as Associate Head for Academics.  She will remain in this part-time position for the next several years, continuing her work with curriculum development, student recruitment, and faculty and staff evaluation.
During her time as Head of School, Ms. Rich has been nationally recognized as an educator.  In 2006 she was named the Arts Education Advocate of the Year, and two years later she received the honor of being chosen as the Vermont Secondary Principal of the Year for 2008.
Former Assistant Head and  Dean of Students David McGinn has taken over the reins as Head of School. During his many years at TA he has served in a multitude of capacities.  He says, "I am humbled by this opportunity to lead the Academy, as we continue the work that has been so important to me these past 17 years."
CLASSES OF 1990 AND 2005 REUNIONS

Members of the Class of 1990 gathered early in the morning of Saturday, August 14, for a tour of Thetford Academy.  New Head of School David McGinn led the group through the White Building, Annex, Arts Building, and newly renovated Daniels Science Building and offered folks a sneak peak at the new gymnasium and cafe and theater in Anderson Hall.

ALUMNUS BIO ADDENDUM:  JAMES DANIEL HARHEN
Hazel and Helen

James Daniel Harhen
graduated with the Thetford Academy Class of 2003. He was the subject of our alumnus bio in the last edition of Alumni Snapshots.

James' story talked about his service with the Vermont National Guard, where his most recent tour of duty had stationed him at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.  Included here is a continuation of his life, written by James in early September.

"I was injured when a Rocket Propelled Grenade (or RPG) struck and shattered my driver's side window. It went by my face and out of the passenger's side window of a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (or MRAP). This happened during a routine night patrol near Bagram Airbase AF. Three others were injured in my vehicle but are all OK. I received superficial shrapnel wounds to my right arm and thigh, and the left side of my face, the most serious of which punctured my sinus under my left eye. I was medically evacuated from Bagram to Germany and then on to Walter Reed in Washington DC, where I underwent surgery to remove the shrapnel and patch my sinus. All of my wounds are now healed up with pretty minimal scarring. I have been done with doctors follow ups for about two weeks, and hopefully will be home in another week or two. I'm doing well but definitely ready to get home."

James was awarded the Purple Heart on July 25th at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. He will be home on September 24th.
