You'll notice that we have redesigned the newsletter. We wanted it to look more like our recently redesigned website. In addition to the new look, you will note some new content. We've added a "From Our Editor" section, in which Barbara Peters will explain what she thinks is great about the books we are publishing. And we'll be adding quizzes and contests in the coming months. So, enjoy, and be sure to visit our website to read more about our great books and about what's still ahead! |

What's New...
There are a lot of changes happening at Poisoned Pen Press now. As always, we are considering new books with fresh ideas. We have recently updated our website. More recently, we have added an author blog. We encourage our authors to share with one another and to share with you! Check out the blog to learn what's going with our authors in their kitchen, in their travels, in their lives, and-of course-in their writing! After serv ings as Associate Publisher for the last several years, I have been promoted to Publisher. Former Publisher Robert Rosenwald will be staying on as President and CTO. It's hard to brag about yourself, but I am very excited about the opportunity. Even my photo looks ecstatic! I look forward to continuing to grow our list and helping you to Discover Mystery™ Congratulations to Mary Anna Evans whose book, Floodgates, earned her the Mississippi Library Association's Author Award for 2011. Floodgates again follows archeologist Faye Longchamp as she uncovers murder in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. According to a starred review inBooklist, "Voodoo, Native American spirituality, greed, and corruption all play roles in what is easily the best installment yet in a too-little-known series." This is a series worth watching, and she's an author worth reading. Congrats, Mary Anna!

From Our Editor...
For every book we publish, I write an extensive editor letter that tells book buyers and reviewers why I think our books are worth reading--publishing is largely about knowing your market. I know this because I've run The Poisoned Pen Bookstore for more than 20 years. As a bookseller, I'm always looking for more insight. I know not everyone can read as fast or as much as I do, so why not tell people what they are getting? What makes our books special? How are we helping them (and you) Discover Mystery™? This monthly column will give you what we've been giving booksellers for years: a look into what I think makes our books special. Somewhat unusually, we have four new books this month. Two of which are debut authors. It's great fun to read a debut novel: the authors are excited about publishing and about their characters--sometimes so much so that editing becomes a hostage negotiation of sorts. Not every character or line can stay. But the end product is always rewarding. In the first of a new series, A Crack In Everything, debut author Angela Gerst bring us intriguing character Susan Callisto. Political adviser by day, Susan-of course-finds herself in the midst of a murder investigation. It's a soft thriller. Intrigue. Politics. A good, old-fashioned love interest. Gerst guides readers through variegated streets and suburbs of Boston, campaign insights, personal revelations, and Susan's transformation from a smart professional to a savvy veteran. Our second debut this season is a bit of a departure for us: it takes us into the world of astrology. Murder in the 11th House brings us debut author Mitchell Lewis and his astrological detective, David Lowell. Set in the wonderful city of New York we discover just how astrology can factor into determining motive in a murder, especially when it comes to greed and politics. With an eclectic cast of characters Lewis introduces us to a memorable mystery full of misdirection. Some writers just get you excited to read, no matter what they are discussing. It is even more of a delight when these writers speak from their field of expertise. It is for that reason that I am always excited to read Nicholas Kilmer. In A Paradise for Fools, the eighth in a series, we are treated to a prequel of sorts as much desired history begins to be revealed. It all starts because of a haircut. While getting his hair cut Fred is treated to some fascinating tattooed skin at the shop. Skin bearing the likeness of a painting that supposedly doesn't exist...Ah, the joy of reading a Kilmer is to follow him into an oddball world where artistic and criminal genius mix into an excellent mystery and a lesson in art history. A must-read for all Michael Connelly fans-read it to see why.
Finally we come to one of our most well reviewed authors, an author who draws her stories less from the "oddball" and more from the realities around us. In her fourth novel, Under the Dog Star, Sandra Parshall takes us into the world of illegal dog fighting. When a prominent physician has his throat ripped out on his property, seemingly by wild dogs, veterinarian Rachel Goddard and Mason County, Virginia, Sheriff's Deputy Tom Bridger get involved in what may be parallel investigations. How does the community respond to a pack of feral canines? Could someone be using the dogs as a screen for crimes? As a tool for murder? Filled with vivid and complex characters, and with provocative ethical dilemmas that enhance the page-turning reading experience, Under the Dog Star is wisely crafted from credible scenarios. You can read more about each of these titles below. I hope that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed editing them.

New Releases...
A Crack In Everything, Angela Gerst Before she traded financial security at a Boston law firm for sandals and jeans in Waltham, Susan Callisto specialized in real estate law. Now she has reinvented herself as a political consultant for ordinary people seeking low-level office. Susan loves her new life-until her sometime boyfriend, Detective Lieutenant Michael Benedict, dumps her without a goodbye. Susan uses humor and perpetual motion to keep away the pain. When local high roller Charles Renfrow offers her a huge retainer to advise his political campaign, Susan is wary. Why would a scientist stalking the human genome want to be mayor of a small Massachusetts town? Finding the answer takes Susan through a maze of toxic secrets. On her way to confront him, Susan instead finds the body of his beautiful assistant. Assigned to the case, Michael reenters Susan's life. When Michael's suspicions settle on another of Susan's clients, Susan elbows her way into the investigation. Now with her own life on the line, Susan uncovers a crack in everything. According to Publishers Weekly, A Crack In Everything "unfolds like a set of Russian nesting dolls with each solution hiding yet another surprising development and each testing Callisto's resolve and resilience." ($24.95 HC, $14.95 Pbk, $22.95 Lg Prnt Pbk). A Paradise For Fools , Nicholas Kilmer The young woman in the hair salon raises her shirt to show a friend a work in progress-a riot of stunning tattoos. From the barber's chair, Fred Taylor knows that those images-weird insects, beasts, and naked human figures-could only come from something amazing: a hitherto unknown painting of rare and significant value. And the girls don't have a clue. Fred knows such a painting needs to be found. His inquiries lead him from the salon to the illegal tattoo parlor of an unlicensed genius. Everyone who must have seen the painting denies that it exists, despite the vivid proof increasingly laid bare on the canvas of the hairdresser's skin. Fred's employer, the collector Clayton Reed, is out of the country. So Fred, left to his own devices, is free to follow the trail, despite the distractions presented by the intriguing librarian Molly Riley. Fred must proceed with caution. Then he encounters the first serious bump in the road: a suspiciously convenient hit-and-run that brings one potential informant to an abrupt dead end. Publishers Weekly says A Paradise For Fools "showcas[es] Kilmer's knack for intriguing premises." ($24.95 HC, $14.95 Pbk, $22.95 Lg Prnt Pbk). Murder in the 11th House, Mitchell Scott Lewis Astrological detective David Lowell must use his astrologer's charts and knowledge to solve the murder of a state judge in a New York City parking garage. Joined by his daughter, Melinda, a young defense attorney who believes the person arrested innocent; his hacker sidekick Mort; patient assistant Sarah; and bodyguard Andy, Lowell races against time to prove the innocence of Johnny Colbert, a mouthy bartender accused of the crime. Birth charts and street smarts help Lowell sort out the misdirections of a cast of characters, ranging from the judge's clerk to the judge's life itself, to trace the crime back to a surprising source. Murder in the 11th House begins a new series that introduces a unique character to the annals of detective fiction. Publishers Weekly calls Murder in the 11th House a " winning debut." ($24.95 HC, $14.95 Pbk, $22.95 Lg Prnt Pbk). Under the Dog Star, Sandra Parshall
Something terrifying is happening to the dogs in the mountain community of Mason County, Virginia. "Missing Dog" posters cover the waiting room walls at Dr. Rachel Goddard's veterinary clinic. A pack of feral canines roams at night, attacking livestock in a desperate search for food. Now a prominent physician, Gordon Hall, has been found dead, his throat torn open.
Sheriff 's Department investigator Tom Bridger believes the killing was premeditated murder, with a trained attack dog as the weapon. But Dr. Hall's son insists that the pack killed his father, and he organizes a group of men to find and shoot the animals.
Rachel and her friend Holly Turner make enemies by trying to move the pack to sanctuary. Tom, in love with Rachel, struggles to divide his time among the feral dog problem, the search for the dogfighting operation, and the hunt for Gordon Hall's killer. It's complicated by Hall's five rivalrous children and a multitude of suspects-human and canine.
Kirkus Reviews suggests Under the Dog Star has "spine-chilling tension from cover to cover." ($24.95 HC, $14.95 Pbk, $22.95 Lg Prnt Pbk).

New in Paperback...
False Fortune,Twist Phelan Business attorney Hannah Dain is in such deep water not even her trusty kayak can keep her afloat. A trip to an abandoned uranium mine with her sister Shelby turns into a daring lake rescue. Then Hannah is appointed lead counsel in Shelby's pollution case where the local Indian tribe is suing the Feds- the case that some people will do anything to keep out of the courtroom. When things seem as if they can't get any stranger, a recently discovered family member shows up on Hannah's doorstep. False Fortune is the fourth in the Pinnacle Peak Mystery Series. According to Kirkus Reviews, False Fortune " provides a worthy heroine, harrowing adventures and a satisfying mystery." Green Monster, Rick Shefchik After a second World Championship in four years, the Boston Red Sox have finally buried the Curse of the Bambino-or have they? Sox owner Louis Kenwood receives an extortion note signed "Babe Ruth" claiming that the 2004 World Series was fixed-and demanding $50 million to keep the information from getting to the press and the Commissioner's office. Thus, the Red Sox turn to private detective Sam Skarda to find out who's behind the extortion plot. Can he assemble all of the pieces to this puzzle before more lives are lost and scandal blasts the Red Sox Nation? Green Monster is the second novel in the Sam Skarda series, following Amen Corner. Booklist calls Green Monster "a genuinely clever mystery." Island Blues, Wendy Howell Mills Sabrina Dunsweeny is discovering that life in a tropical environment isn't all fun and games. When the town council offers her employment as the island's first official ombudsman, Sabrina is thrilled. Her first order of business is to deal with a number of burglaries. But as she digs deeper into the theftless break-ins, she begins to suspect that this mystery originated in the rum-soaked days of prohibition. Then, Sabrina must face the Hummers who claim that they can hear a hum they can only rid themselves of through private rituals. When the spokesman of the Hummers is murdered, Sabrina develops a theory that makes her the target of a killer's rage. Will she survive her first week on the job? This is the second installment in the Island Style Mystery Series. According to Booklist, Island Blues is " smartly constructed, and comfortably written, with a likable protagonist and a fresh setting." Screenscam, Michael Bowen Rep Pennyworth faces the client from hell: Charlotte Buchanan contends her 1997 novel is the basis for the 1999 film, Contemplation of Death. She wants to sue. Rep digs in, aided by his literature-addicted wife Melissa, and files suit. By return mail comes a death threat, a grisly (and gristly) version of "Hold Your Tongue." Research shows the film's director to be Aaron Eastman, Hollywood legend, whose Red Guard should have been a box office and critical smash but fell oddly short. Eastman contends the Oscar balloting was sabotaged. He and Rep talk and, bit by bit, the outline of a bizarre scheme to destroy the credibility of Red Guard-and Eastman-emerges. Hoosiers Rep and Melissa aren't prepared for what happens next. The first in the Rep and Melissa Pennyworth Series. Publishers Weekly says " Bowen writes with knowledge and wit" in Screenscam. Service Dress Blues, Michael Bowen On the night before the 2008 Army-Navy Game, a midshipman is found stark naked and barely alive in the lobby of a cheap motel near the Naval Academy. The plebe's closest relatives are Ole and Lena Lindstrom, a pair of aging but still scrappy Wisconsin political activists who want lawyer Rep Pennyworth to help them get copyright protection for an audacious package of campaign ideas that put rich and ruthless gambling interests in the cross-hairs. The political neophyte they have in mind as a candidate heads a think-tank at UWM, where she is exploiting for her own political purposes the sensitive issue of domestic violence. The fifth book in the Rep and Melissa Pennyworth series. According to Publishers Weekly, Service Dress Blues " light tone and easygoing dialogue make for a quick read."
