Honda to Recycle Rare Earths from Batteries Honda Motor Company has reported it will start recycling rare earths and other key materials in hybrid auto batteries - a key innovation in the Japanese automaker's effort to be green. Japan is dependent on imports, mostly from China, for rare earth elements, which are essential for making high-tech products, but a steady supply has been periodically threatened over political disputes with China. Beijing, meanwhile, has defended its export curbs on rare earths as an environmental measure and rejected a World Trade Organization challenge by the United States, Europe and Japan. China has about 30 percent of rare earths deposits but accounts for more than 90 percent of production. Honda officials said the company was targeting September or October to begin recycling of rare earths. They said it would be a first for the auto industry. |

Big Shanty Road Project Open
Big Shanty Road to provide major congestion relief in area. Local officials gathered recently to officially open the long-anticipated Big Shanty Road project in the Town Center area. This project is important regionally because it will significantly reduce congestion in this major corridor. Classic cars were on display during the ribbon cutting event, which was sponsored by the Town Center Area Community Improvement District.
Big Shanty Road was separated in the 1970s by Interstate 75 but is reconnected with this project. The two-mile long roadway is designed to provide an alternative to the congested Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway corridors.
Big Shanty improvements also include a multi-use trail on the entire length of the project, providing a safe pedestrian environment for employees, Kennesaw State University students and visitors to the Town Center area. The project cost about $26 million, with funding from the voter-approved Cobb SPLOST and several state and federal funds.

Georgia House Approves Motor Vehicle Tax Change
House lawmakers passed legislation that would change Georgia's tax code to allow married people to keep more income and phase out property taxes on motor vehicles as people buy new or used cars and trucks.
Under the plan, lawmakers would eliminate the annual property tax paid on motor vehicles purchased after March 1, 2013. Instead, motorists would pay a one-time fee based on the vehicle's value that tops out at 7 percent in 2015. People who purchased their cars and trucks before the proposed change in the law would continue paying annual property tax bills until they buy another new or used vehicle.
Married couples could claim $1,000 - $2,000 more in money exempt from the state income tax under the plan.
The legislation would also phase out the sales tax that manufacturers pay on the energy used to produce their goods, a move that would align Georgia with neighboring states. But that decision will eliminate a source of income that local governments use to support schools and other services. Under the bill, local governments have the options to impose a new tax replacing the income they lose from the existing tax on manufacturers.

Manufacturer Recalls
Honda is recalling nearly 52,615 2007-2008 Acura TL vehicles. Underhood temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely and result in a cracked and possibly a fluid leak. That can cause the cars to lose power steering or even cause a fire if the fluid leaks onto the hot exhaust. Owners will get letters in the mail telling them to take their cars to an Acura dealer. Dealers will install a new heat-resistant power steering hose.
Honda is recalling 50,190 2012 Honda Civics. Certain of these vehicles may have been assembled with the driver's side driveshaft retainer clip omitted. This could result in separation of the driveshaft, loss of drive power and vehicle roll away when the vehicle is placed in park. Dealers will install a new drive shaft.

Kia is recalling 72,568 2006-2008 Kia Rodeo vehicles manufactured from February, 2005 to December, 2007. The front passenger seat occupant sensor mat can become fatigued and crack. If sufficient cracking occurs, the system will not be able to detect whether a child is the seat and the airbag will deploy in the event of a crash when it should not. Dealers will replace the occupant sensor mat.
Kia is recalling 21,012 2009 Kia Borrego vehicles manufactured from May, 2008 to January, 2009 and equipped with non-adjustable brake pedals. Some of these pedals may have fiberglass composition mounts that could break off in a crash and render the brakes inoperative after initial impact. Dealers will replace the pedal mount.
