Avoid Brutal Summer Sun

Since data links the sun to skin cancer, below are six suggestions to lower your risk.

1. Give sunscreen a second chance. Sunscreens have improved. They last longer, stand up better to water and feel less greasy than ever before.

2. Read the (new) labels. Three key things to look for: SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, and water resistance for 80 minutes.

3. Tired of wearing heavy long sleeve shirts for sun protection? Try special sun protective clothing with UPF ratings (think of it as SPF for fabric). The clothes have a tight weave for sun protection, but are still lightweight.

4. Apply early and often.  Slather on the sunscreen before you hit the beach. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes for sunscreen to start working. It has to be absorbed through the skin. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours.

5. Don't skimp on sunscreen. It takes about an ounce to cover your whole body (about the size of a golf ball) and a tablespoon to cover your face.

6. Know the secret to spray-on products. People tend to miss spots so always put on two coats.

Greetings!

Our summers seem to be getting hotter and shorter.  School will start before we know it.  In the extreme temperatures we are seeing, pay a little more attention to your vehicle.  Keep an eye on the temperature gauge to make sure your car is not overheating.  A slight coolant leak can become a big problem. Also, if your battery is weak, the heat will kill it pretty quickly.  If you vehicle hesitates any at all when starting, have your battery checked.  We check batteries when we do the Mini Service.

Curb the Car Dashboard Technology

Automobile dashboards are becoming an arcade of text messages, GPS images, phone calls and web surfing.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is asking automakers to curb those distractions when vehicles are moving.  Proposed voluntary guidelines for manufacturers include a recommendation that dashboards be designed so that distracting devices are automatically disabled unless the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is in park.

NHTSA Administrator David Strickland says, "We recognize that vehicle manufacturers want to build vehicles that include the tools and conveniences expected by today's American drivers. The guidelines we're proposing would offer real-world guidance to automakers to help them develop electronic devices that provide features consumers want without disrupting a driver's attention or sacrificing safety."

Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said, "Drivers are going to have conversations, listen to music and read maps while driving, and automakers are helping them do this more safety with integrated hands-free systems that help drivers focus on the road.
 Crash
Guidelines were inspired by the recent number of deadly crashes due to distraction. There were an estimated 3,092 deaths in crashes affected by distractions in 2010.  It is important to ensure that dashboard technologies are not simply making it more convenient and more appealing to drive while distracted.

Have a conversation with the young drivers in your family to ensure they are driving without distractions.

Governor Deal Freezes Georgia Gas Tax
Fuel EconomyGovernor Nathan Deal has frozen Georgia's gas tax, preventing an increase that would have kicked in July 1.

Deal signed an executive order freezing the gas tax at current levels, saving motorists nearly one cent (.8 cents) for the next six months.

Deal said the state's economy has slowly improved with growing revenue and the unemployment rate decreasing. Deal says taxpayers in the state should not have to take on the "burden" of a gas tax right now.

Manufacturer Recalls

Honda is recalling nearly 53,000 Acura TL sedans to fix a problem with power steering hoses. The hoses can deteriorate over time and leak fluid. That can cause the cars to lose power steering or even cause a fire if the fluid leaks onto the hot exhaust.  The sedans are from 2007 and 2008 model years. Owners will get letters in the mail telling them to take their cars to an Acura dealer.
