Greetings!
I hope this newsletter finds you happy and well. I do not normally talk about politics but the TSPLOST or Transportation Investment Act is a scary proposition. I have included more detailed information below. Please do some research on your own, if needed, prior to voting on July 31, 2012. In my opinion, this referendum needs to be defeated. I hope you take the time to learn more before you vote.

TSPLOST - Transportation Investment Act of 2010 - HB 277 - Regional Transportation Referendum
Whatever you want to call it, it's a 1% sales tax for ten years to raise $6 Billion dollars for politicians to distribute around the Atlanta Region as they think best. Cherokee and Cobb are donor counties. There are 10 other counties in the Atlanta Region.
 | | Tired of Traffic? Is the Regional Transportation Referendum the answer? |
There is a multi-million dollar advertising campaign underway to "educate" you to vote for new developments. You may have already heard about the 1% sales tax referendum coming on July 31. It is being sold as a method to fund road improvements and to relieve traffic congestion. However, millions of dollars for an ad campaign is a lot to spend without an agenda. Ad campaigns are paid and authorized by Metro Atlanta Voter Education Network (MAVEN). If you look at the list of backers, you see politicians, contractors, real estate developers and others that would stand to make a lot of money developing real estate along the right of way.
A new 1% sales tax is proposed for road improvements, however 85% of the money will be used to build a light rail train from Cumberland Mall to MARTA Arts Center Station. Do not be fooled the train is still on the table and grossly under funded. Another tax increase is on the way, but you will not get a vote on this one. Of the 1.2 Billion estimated cost, the TSPLOST will only pay $857 Million, leaving $343 Million to come from Other Sources. There will be an estimated $9.6 Million in annual operating costs. MARTA is already loosing money daily. Do we want to add another $9.6 Million to the overextended annual budget?
Road improvement to I-75 will not help reduce traffic congestion on Dallas Hwy, Macland Road or any other part of your commute. Few improvements are projected for Cobb and Cherokee counties. Our tax dollars could be spent in any area of the Atlanta Region not necessarily in our counties.
Some of Cobb County's local projects include $7 million to begin construction on Mableton Town Square; $3.69 million for updates at McCollum Airfield; 9.4 million to build and expand senior and para transit transportation programs, and millions for general county wide resurfacing and streetscapes. While these are projects that may need attention, how are they going to improve our traffic congestion? Streetscapes? Really?
Tax Facts:
- 1% Sales Tax for Ten Years
- An APPOINTED committee will control all projects
- LOCAL county control is LOST to REGIONAL control
- NO guarantee any project will be completed
- LOCAL tax dollars become REGIONAL dollars
- Citizens Review Panel with no enforcement authority

There are approximately 59 charging stations in metro Atlanta. The Marietta City Council approved one electric vehicle parking space for Marietta Square in 2010. Marietta's Economic Development Division is investigating a public electric vehicle charging station on Marietta Square.
