Toyota to Return to Full Production in September

North American production is currently at 80 percent on average. Eight of the 12 North American built models returned to full production in June after the Tsunami. Toyota, along with Honda Motor Company was one of the hardest hit. It cut production to about 30 percent in May by idling factories for several days or reducing their hours.

It warned dealers to expect shortages of some models. The automaker will focus on making up as much lost production as possible after September.

EPA Finalizes E15 Pump Labeling Requirements

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued fuel pump labeling and other requirements for gasoline blends containing more than 10 and up to 15 percent ethanol, known as E15. These requirements will help ensure that E15 is properly labeled and used once it enters the market.

The new orange and black label must appear on fuel pumps that dispense E15.  This label will help inform consumers about which vehicles can use E15. This label will also warn consumers against using E15 in vehicles older than model year 2001, motorcycles, watercraft and gasoline-powered equipment such as lawnmowers and chainsaws. Aircraft such as my SkyCycle can not use gasoline with ethanol.  Also, be aware that fuel economy will drop with the use of gasoline with ethanol.

American Honda Motor Company
Close to 100% Production

Honda has announced plans for the accelerated recovery of auto production in North America following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Honda will increase production volume at its North American automobile plants to a rate of 100 percent of the original production plan in August, for all models except the 2012 Civic.

As the supply of parts from Japan improves, production will ramp up in August on a step-by-step, plant-by-plant, and model-by-model basis, with production returning to 100 percent of the original plan for models including the 4-cylinder Accord, CR-V and Acura RDX, as well as all V-6 models including the Accord, Accord Crosstour, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, and the Acura TL, MDX and ZDX.

Production of the all-new 2012 Civic lineup will continue at a reduced rate of approximately 50 percent due to the limited supply of key components. However, this situation continues to be evaluated and full production is expected to resume sometime this fall, with plans to meet anticipated strong demand for the fuel efficient new Civic lineup.

John Mendel, Executive Vice President of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. said, "Throughout this crisis, Honda has been fighting to achieve a speedy recovery, while maintaining a focus on our longer-term plans for continued growth in sales and production in order to meet the growing needs of our customers." Honda has managed the unprecedented parts supply issues that resulted from the devastating impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan with no layoffs at any of its 14 production plants in North America.

Other Automakers in the News...

Mazda Motor Corp plans to leave its joint venture with Ford Motor Co and stop building cars in the U.S.  Mazda and Ford operate the AutoAlliance International plant in Michigan as a 50-50 partnership. Citing unnamed company sources, Mazda is considering selling its stake to Ford as the Japanese automaker tries to restructure its global production. Mazda cars sold in the U.S. will be shipped from Japan and Mexico starting around 2013.

Kia Motors plant in West Point say they're considering expanding their workforces in preparation for the automaker's plan to construct the Optima sedan.  The Georgia plant is scheduled to begin producing the 2012 model year Optima later this year.

Toyota class action suit updated: U.S. District Judge James Selna (Santa Ana, CA) has set a court hearing date of February 19, 2013 to determine whether a Utah crash that killed Paul Van Alfen and Charlene Lloyd was due to a defective acceleration of a 2008 Toyota
Camry. Van Alfen was killed on November 5, 2010,
when his 2008 Toyota Camry accelerated and slammed
into a wall oppoite an exit ramp off Interstate
80 near Wendover Utah. Lloyd, a passenger, died
from her injuries the next day.  Van Alfen's
wife Shirlene and son Cameron were also injured
in the crash.  The lawsuit alleges that the
2008 Toyota Camery unexpectedly accelerated
and did not stop even after Van Alfen applied
the brakes.

Honda Recalls

Honda is recalling 1,512,107 2005 -2010 model year Accord, CR-V and Element vehicles manufactured July 1, 2004 to August 4, 2010. The production date and vehicle identification number (VIN) are located on a sticker on the driver door jamb. On certain vehicles, due to certain driving styles, the outer race to the secondary shaft bearing in the automatic transmission may break allowing the transmission idle gear to contact an electronic sensor inside the transmission. The result could be engine stall and unexpected vehicle movement after the Honda Accordtransmission is put into park. Dealers will update the automatic transmission control software.  Contact your local dealer or call 800-999-1009.
