Georgia Sales Tax Bill Still Alive

Georgia House Bill 388, which aims to create a sales tax on services of many small businesses, is still alive in the Georgia Legislature. The bill, if passed would be devastating to the automotive service industry. Other service industries such as hair and nail salons, accounting and legal services would also be affected.  The new bill would tax labor and services instead of just parts and products.

Despite the fact that no action was taken on Georgia HB 388 before the Georgia Legislature adjourned, the legislation could be considered during the special session later this summer.

To view full text of the bill and send a letter to members of the Georgia state legislature, visit www.TakingTheHill.com

Scary Phenomenon Rising even in Cobb County

I recently read an article in the Marietta Daily Journal by Laura Armstrong.

Children are dying in hot cars also known as death by hyperthermia. Last month in Kennesaw, a five-month-old died after being forgotten by her 20 year old cousin. Five hours later it was too late for the little girl in the May heat wave.  I can't imagine what this did to the family.

According to Kansas-based Kids and Cars, an organization that works to prevent these family-shattering deaths "through data collection, education and public awareness," 49 children died in hot cars in 2010, an increase from previous years.  Check out kidsandcars.org for some solid safeguard ideas.

New Child Booster Seat Law Effective July 1, 2011

Governor Nathan Deal signed into law Senate Bill 88.  This legislation, introduced as SB 88 in the Senate by Senator Jeff Mullis and as HB 279 in the House by Representative Alan Powell, will require children to be properly restrained in a child passenger safety restraint device until they are 8 years of age.   Boost and Buckle

"Protecting children is one of the most important jobs we legislators are elected to do.  Seat belts in today's vehicles are made for adult bodies" said Powell.  "Booster seats, are positioning devices that help elevate a child to the proper height. I've seen data that says booster seats used with a seat belt will lower injury risk by 59% compared with belts alone." The new law went into effect on July 1, 2011.
