Honda to cut production of popular models

Honda Motor Company warned U. S dealers that it will run short of popular models such as the Civic compact later this summer because of parts shortages caused by Japan's earthquake.

Normal production may not return until the end of the year. Honda will significantly cut production of the new 2012 Civic, the sixth most popular car in the U.S.

In addition, the 2012 version of the CR-V small sport utility vehicle will be delayed by at least a month this fall.
Both vehicles are made in North America, but Honda must cut production because it is running low on Japanese imports of chips, sensors and other parts. Japanese plants that supply these parts were damaged by the March 11 earthquake or hampered by power outages.

Other vehicles which could have delivery delays until later in the year are the Fit subcompact, CR-Z, Insight and Civic gas-electric hybrids.

Are Small Cars Set for Price Hikes?

If you are considering replacing your current vehicle with a new one at any point this calendar year, especially a small car, you might want to consider heading to the showroom sooner than later.

2010 Honda CR-Z

New car prices are rising, some as high as ten percent.  Buyers are looking for fuel efficient and hybrid automobiles.  You may be paying more later this year for many models. And in some cases, you might find yourself unable to get the exact model that you really want.  Another consideration is the crisis in Japan with production and supply issues.   It is still early to see the full effects as supply has not yet become strained.

The NADA has already observed a price spike on used small cars and hybrids.  Adesa, which is a major wholesaler of used cars reported that prices on four-cylinder vehicles have risen by 16 percent just over the past two months.

Bottom line:  It is likely to see a surge in prices across the board on new vehicles with the most significant hikes on small car models sourced from Japan.  If gas prices continue to rise, premiums on fuel efficient and hybrid cars may become the norm.

Ten Car Buying Tips...

1. Do your homework - know what you want and what your price range is.

2. Understand what drives a car salesperson - money and quotas.

3. Provide limited information - the salesperson does not need to know you need a car by the end of the week or you just received $5,000 from the insurance company.

4. Let the salesperson do the talking so you don't reveal too much.

5. Be disinterested - Be non-committal. Tell the salesperson you are just looking and comparing vehicles.

6. Don't go alone - bring a friend, family member or spouse with you. They can keep you from talking too much.

7. Have a pre-purchase inspection done by a technician prior to purchasing a vehicle. At Alan Cox Automotive a pre-purchase inspection is $94.00. You will receive a full assessment of the vehicle.

2011 Honda Accord

8. Check with Carfax.com, Edmunds.com or NADA.com to get the value of the vehicle you are purchasing and trade-in value.

9. Don't offer details about a trade-in. Make the deal before introducing a trade-in vehicle. If the salesperson asked about a trade-in, be non-committal. I am not sure. I might give my other car to my nephew.

10. Have financing ready ahead of time. Even if you use their financing, you have some information for comparison.
