Southeast Conference E-News
Dear Member:

Thank you for taking a minute to read Southeast Conference's E-News. Each month we'll update you on committee meetings, industry events, where your support is needed, and much more. We've updated a few things and hope you enjoy the new SEC E-News.

Continuing the update of the CEDS 5 Year Plan please take a few minutes to take the CEDS Questionnaire and tell us a little bit about your community. You'll find a link directly to your left in green.

That is not all we've updated. If you haven't been around the Southeast Conference website recently...

Just what is the victory?

A note from Executive Director Shelly Wright.

Judge John Sedwick ruled that the Tongass Exemption was illegally adopted and his decision reinstates the Roadless Rule in the Tongass.

So just what is the trophy on the wall for the national environmental groups?

Is it the egregious increase in unemployment and lost wage earning jobs in Southeast Alaska since 1990? We now have half the jobs that pay half the wage to support all the people.

Is it the closure of two pulp mills which resulted in the decline of about 80% of manufacturing jobs in Southeast Alaska, not to mention the support businesses that were forced to close their doors and lay off those employees?  Is it the loss of manufacturing infrastructure that has created a dependence on outside companies to support the few businesses we have left?

Is it the decline in school funding and enrollment? Our region is falling seriously behind in education. If we have the students to attend our schools we can't get the funding to support the education. If there are so many opportunities for tourism jobs and fishing jobs in Southeast Alaska why are our schools closing and our communities shrinking at alarming rates?

Is it the inability to develop power projects and have access to our natural resources that our nation so desperately needs? Blocked permitting processes and unrealistic litigation is strangling our progress.

Or is it that now more people of Southeast Alaska are feeling forced to leave the place they and their family have called home in order to find work?

It must be the proud accomplishment that environmental groups, via earthjustice litigation, were able to help eliminate more than 3,000 jobs in Southeast Alaska in 20 years.  They must be proud to take the food out of the mouths of the families and the education from the children in Southeast Alaska.  Now, just as the roadless exemption "hung like an ugly shroud" over the comfortably funded jobs of environmental groups, it is replaced by further homelessness, unemployment, social injustice and despair.

$25 million in Rural Broadband Grants

On March 4, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utility Service (RUS) announced the availability of $25 million in grants to provide broadband access to rural areas that do not currently have broadband service. Funded through carryover balances from previous annuals appropriations, eligible state, local governments, tribes and for-profit and non-profit organizations may apply for Community Connect grants to construct, acquire or lease facilities to provide broadband services to homes, businesses and community facilities. Grants will range from $50,000 to $1.5 million and will require matching contributions. Applications are due to RUS by May 3, 2011.
