Thank You!

Greetings from Shelly Wright,
Executive Director

A warm thank you to all of our members that attended our Annual Meeting in Petersburg and a great big thank you to the People of Petersburg for all of the hospitality they provided.  I for one had great food, productive networking, fun with old friends , and really enjoyed meeting some new friends.  We had 211 members registered this year.

WOW!

I hope everyone that attended the Strategic Doing Workshop liked the forum.  You will be getting some follow up information very soon and hopefully we will be able to get our next five year Comprehensive Economic Development Strategic in order.

I want to thank all of our presenters.  It is such a challenge finding enough time to hear all the new and exciting things that are happening in the region as well as keep up with the ongoing projects and issues.  Our presenters were informative and interesting.  I know it is information by "fire hose" and it makes the days long but I felt the people of Petersburg and Southeast Conference provided you with enough late night entertainment to keep you going during the day. In case you missed something or you would like to review, all the presentations are on our website; www.seconference.org

Herb Pond

Our Auction was a smashing success.  Thanks many many times to Herb Pond our most wonderful friend and auctioneer. Congratulations to Lori Blood for bein g high bidder on the Princess Cruise, Paul Axelson high bidder on the Alaska Airlines Tickets, Jodi Mitchell fittingly was high bidder on the RED HIGH HEELS, David Stone's swan song....paying $1000 for silver and gold jewelry from Prince Rupert and Eric Wolfe out bidding on the Tanaku Lodge Experience in Elfin Cove.

To all of those who donated auction items and all that paid for them, we and the scholars of southeast THANK YOU.  We out did our amount from last year by about $6,000.  Something you all may not know is after the auction ended our board member Tim Rooney offered to stand by his bid if Alaska Airlines would donate another pair of tickets.  Alaska Airlines said yes and we got another $2,500 for our scholarship fund.  Thanks to both!  The total amount for the auction is $19,457.

As we say a sad good bye to our long time board members David Stone, Mike Korsmo and Paul Axelson we welcome to our newly elected board members, Lori Blood, Merrill Sanford, Hap Symmonds, Bryce Dahlstrom and Richard Peterson. Returning board members, Tim Rooney and Tory Korn were re-elected as well.  Welcome Jan Hill as the new President of the Board. I look forward to, in Jan's words "shaking things up" with Jan for the next year.

Sincerely,

Shelly Wright

Southeast Conference saw sunny days in Petersburg this September

Hosted by the City & Borough of Petersburg, Southeast Conference's 2010 Annual Membership Meeting saw over 200 in attendance. This sleepy little fishing town was bursting at the seams with business executives, state and municipal officials, entrepreneurs, and Southeast Conference!

Things kicked off with "Strategic Doing". Facilitating was Christi Bell - University of Alaska Center for Economic Development, Becky Beck - Board President of Petersburg Tides Inn, Casey Campbell - State of Alaska Department of Community, Commerce and Economic Development, Linda Ketchum, - University of Alaska Center for Economic Development SourceLink Network Builder and Rick Wolk - University of Alaska Southeast. Breakout focus groups were titled: entrepreneurial ecosystems, mariculture, food systems, and woody biomass. Talks were centered on things that can or will be done with a standing rule of no negativity or what can't be done. Presentations for Tuesday afternoon's program can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Wednesday's agenda highlighted energy news in our region. Updates on the Kake to Petersburg intertie and hydro developments at Reynolds Creek, Pelican, Hoonah, and Sitka. Thanks to Senator Bert Stedman for sharing his vision for energy development during lunch keynote address.  An overview of the upcoming Southeast Intergrated Resource Plan project, technical insight into system performance by SEAPA, the possible future of electric transportation by AEL&P, and the energy planning efforts by the US Forest Service are among the presentations given. Wednesday's presentations can be found by CLICKING HERE.

VA
Juneau VA Outreach Clinic to Begin Service October 26th

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony set for October 23rd.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 15, 2010

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - The Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) is pleased to announce the Juneau VA Outreach Clinic located in the Juneau Federal Building will begin services to southeast Alaska Veterans on Tuesday, October 26.  Hours for the clinic will be Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The main number for the clinic will be 907-796-4300 or toll free 1-888-308-7890.  Staff will be available to take calls beginning on opening day.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 23 at 1:30 p.m.  Tours of the facility will follow the ceremony and be available until 3:30 p.m.  The event is open to the public.

"The Alaska VA is excited to have a clinical presence in southeast Alaska," stated Alex Spector, Director of the AVAHS.  "It is important to get VA medical care closer to where Veterans live."  With the activation of the Juneau VA Outreach Clinic, more than 88 percent of enrolled Alaska Veterans will reside in a borough with a VA clinical presence.

The new clinic will provide Southeast Alaska Veterans with routine Primary Care, including screening services, as well as Mental Health services.  The Juneau VA Outreach Clinic will facilitate resource sharing with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) for cross coverage of medical providers and clinical lab operations.  In addition, VA will continue to use USCG space for performing audiology evaluations for Veterans in the Juneau catchment area.   Rear Admiral Christopher Colvin, commander of the Seventeenth Coast Guard District, states, "It is our honor to serve Veterans and to partner with the Alaska VA Healthcare System.  We have a long history of sharing resources through the Alaska Federal Health Care Partnership.  This new VA Clinic gives us another opportunity to enhance care for Alaska federal beneficiaries."

Ten percent of Alaska veterans reside in Southeast Alaska.  The VA has had a continuous administrative office presence in the Juneau Federal Building for many years.

The Alaska VA provided 142,246 visits for 15,152 veterans during FY2009.  In addition to providing direct care to veterans at its main clinic location in Anchorage and community based outpatient clinics located in Fairbanks, Kenai, and Wasilla, the VA purchased over $39,000,000 of care from Alaska community providers and hospitals.
