Alaska morns the loss of a remarkable man

Serving as an United States Senator for Alaska from 1968 to 2009, he was the longest serving Republican senator  and the seventh longest serving senator in history.  During his career in the Senate, he served as assistant Republican leader, Chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics, Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration, Chairman of the Committee on Governmental Affairs, Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, and Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

He worked tirelessly on improving Alaska's facilities and infrastructure; from schools, hospitals and clinics, roads, docks and airports to energy and water/sewer  facilities. In 2000 the Alaska State Legislature honored Ted Stevens as "Alaska of the Century" for his efforts in building Alaska from the wild territory it was to successful state it is today.

Beloved by his constituents, whom he would rather refer to as his neighbors, he was an Alaskan's Alaskan. Known for his unwavering grace, strength of character, and incredible work ethic; Alaska has lost its greatest statesman.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 18th at 2p.m. at the Anchorage Baptists Temple.

Notes of condolences may be sent to Mrs. Ted (Catherine) Stevens, 1717 West 11th, Anchorage, AK 99501.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North to the Future Foundation, 701 W. 8th Avenue, Suite 700, Anchorage, AK 99501

Alaska has lead the nation in job creation over the last year, according to new data from the non-profit Rockefeller Institute

By Pat Forgey | JUNEAU EMPIRE

Alaska has led the nation in job creation over the last year, according to new data from the non-profit Rockefeller Institute.

Alaska topped North Dakota in percentage growth in jobs over the last year, mostly by not losing jobs. Those were the only two states with positive job growth in the year ended March 31, the last year for which data was available. Alaska's jobs increased by 1.3 percent, while North Dakota was up 0.6 percent.

The most recent data from the state, as of June, shows Alaska with 342,400 people employed, up 4,200 from a year ago. That data does not include the self-employed, fishermen, agricultural workers, and some others.

Alaska's oil-fueled economy has remained strong over the last year while others have declined.

"It's not surprising that Alaska is doing better than the average in the country, or better than most states," said state labor economist Neil Fried.

The strength of the oil business, where prices have over the last year stayed over $70 a barrel, and sometimes topped $80 a barrel, has kept state government coffers flush and state government spending stable as well.

That's come at a time when other state governments are laying off workers to balance their budgets.

"From a fiscal situation, we've got to be one of the envies of the nation," Fried said.

AMHS

Coast Guard honors the Alaska Marine Highway System

The AMHS was honored for participating in the USCG's AMVER System

The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) was honored recently during an award ceremony in the nation's capital for its participation in the U.S. Coast Guard's Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER).

The awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., coincided with a meeting among Alaska's congressional delegation staffers by Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Deputy Commissioner of Marine Operations, Jim Beedle and AMHS General Manager John Falvey. The pair also met with Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Authority representatives.

During 2009, AMHS crews and vessels joined hundreds of other nations in providing a worldwide safety network to assist search and rescue coordinators in responding to emergencies at sea.
