We Need Your Help
Young Growth Timber Inventory
As we enter the end of another year and the beginning of a
New Year, Southeast Alaska and the Timber industry are faced with recurring
obstacles and new challenges for survival.
One of the tools needed for future timber economic sustainability is a
Young Growth Inventory.
Many of you have
expressed the importance of this timber cruise and the importance of providing
a timely snapshot of the current value of the young growth forest in the
region. For local businesses and local
governments to plan for the future and transition from old growth forest to
second growth forest, they need to understand the timber resource for Southeast
Alaska.
Doing this takes money and we are asking you, our members, to
help raise that money in the form of contributions.
Contact our office at shellyw@seconference.org.
All final reports will be posted on our
web site at completion.

Alaska Receives $1.9M to Map State's Broadband Availability
For Immediate Release
November 30, 2009
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Awards $1.9 Million to the Denali Commission for the Connect Alaska Broadband Mapping Initiative.
Anchorage, AK - Today, the Denali Commission, an independent federal agency in Anchorage, Alaska, received a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to support a comprehensive broadband mapping initiative in Alaska. The Denali Commission was designated by Alaska Governor Sean Parnell as the single entity in Alaska to apply for funding from the NTIA. The Denali Commission (Commission) will employ the services of broadband mapping leader, Connected Nation, to help map and plan broadband in the state of Alaska. Connected Nation will conduct these mapping activities under the name of Connect Alaska. The $1.9 million grant provided through the NTIA's State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The data collected from the Connect Alaska initiative will be displayed in the national broadband map, which will help inform policymakers and provide consumers with improved information on broadband Internet services available in the United States. "This initiative will deliver a comprehensive and accurate broadband map down to the census block level for all areas of Alaska and develop Alaska's very first Broadband Steering Committee," said Krag Johnsen, chief operating officer of the Denali Commission. The steering committee will be comprised of state, federal and non-profit agency participants, as well as Alaska's telecommunications providers. In addition to providing guidance for the two-year mapping effort, the steering committee will: - produce annual reports on the broadband status in Alaska,
- plan research related to broadband adoption, and
- produce an annual work plan for broadband expansion to un-served and under-served areas.
Connected Nation is a prominent voice for the nation's need for better broadband data and has worked closely with national leaders and provided numerous filings in support of a process for broadband data collection at the national level.
"We are excited to be working with the Denali Commission to help create a comprehensive broadband map in the state of Alaska," said Brian R. Mefford, Connected Nation's chief executive officer. "We look forward to being a part of this collaborative effort to increase the accessibility and use of broadband in Alaska."

ACEP awarded $4.6M for geothermal study
Submitted by Marmian Grimes Phone: 907-474-7902 11/30/09
The Alaska Center for Energy and Power at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will use a new federal grant to study geothermal exploration techniques in Alaska.
The $4.6 million Department of Energy grant will fund a project that will use remote sensing to identify potential geothermal resources throughout the state and determine their energy-producing potential. The grant requires a $1 million match. The university will seek matching funds through the state Renewable Energy Fund.
The remote-sensing technique, currently being used for volcano research, will be verified through traditional, ground-based geophysical surveys and drilling. While these traditional methods are reliable, the associated costs may not always be economical, preventing exploration in many areas. Remote sensing could offer a less-costly alternative.
"We are partnering with our colleagues at the Alaska Volcano Observatory," explained Gwen Holdmann, ACEP director. "If we can prove this less-expensive technology can provide reliable data, it opens up a new world for geothermal exploration in the state." Pilgrim Hot Springs, near Nome, will serve as the testing site. ACEP has partnered with the landowner, the Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks, and adjacent landowner, Mary's Igloo Native Corporation, to conduct the study. The Pilgrim geothermal system was one of the first partially explored geothermal systems in Alaska during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Researchers will use data from the previous studies in the project.
The ACEP study could determine whether Pilgrim is viable as a source of electrical power for the city of Nome and the surrounding area, a region with some of the highest energy costs in the United States. Electricity on the Seward Peninsula comes from diesel generators and costs 38 to 63 cents per kilowatt-hour for residential customers.
If a significant resource can be verified at Pilgrim Hot Springs, it could provide geothermal power for Nome and substantially reduce energy costs on the Seward Peninsula.
