Developing Alaska Rural Tourism

2008 Call for Projects

Juneau-Beginning this fall, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development-Office of Economic Development (OED) and the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) are initiating an 18-month project to provide technical assistance and training for regional and community tourism development efforts, and provide business mentorship opportunities for new tourism businesses in rural Alaska. This exciting new project is a key component of the Developing Alaska Rural Tourism (DART) program.

Under the DART program, OED has helped local and regional efforts to
  • Create regional tourism marketing strategies and regional websites.
  • Develop regional "brands" that distinguish the region and its unique tourism attractions, and
  • Organize assessment tours, bringing in industry experts who can assess and give exposure to new or developing tourism attractions or "products".
The DART program also offers visitor industry training, aimed at boosting rural businesses and employment, including OED's own AlaskaHost customer service training program. DART training also draws upon business and other training available from the University of Alaska, or vocational or technical training programs.

For more information on the DART program visit the State of Alaska, DCCED website at What is DART?

Angoon Airport EIS Project

The Angoon EIS process continues to move forward as the FAA study team continues to gather additional information on potential airport operational constraints on airport locations in the Angoon area. Since our kickoff meetings in early 2008, the EIS team has:

Installed wind data collection and data storage equipment at three sites near Angoon.
Initiated discussion with potential cooperating agencies, stakeholders, and other parties with jurisdictional authority, special expertise, or special interest in the proposed airport project.
Completed the draft Supplemental Airport Planning Memorandum: Working Paper One.
Developed a project website to provide project updates throughout the EIS process.
Initiated a review of natural, cultural, and land use resource information that could be impacted by the proposed airport.
