Swiss study shows cost reduction with mandatory call to telemedicine center before physician visit
MEDGATE logo
At Med-e-Tel 2011, Chantal Grandchamp of Swiss Telemedicine Center MEDGATE, presented a study that aimed to empirically estimate the efficiency of a Swiss telemedicine service introduced in 2003. Data used for the study were gathered by a major Swiss health insurer, over a period of six years and involving 160.000 insured adults.

In Switzerland, health insurance is mandatory, but everyone has the option of choosing between a managed care plan and a fee-for-service plan. The study focused on a conventional fee-for-service plan including a mandatory access to a telemedicine service in which the insured are obliged to phone this medical call center prior to visiting a physician. It was shown that this type of plan generates much lower average health expenditures than a conventional insurance plan.

Reasons for this may include selection, incentive effects or simply efficiency. In the study sample, about 90% of the difference in health expenditure could be explained by selection and incentive effects. The remaining 10% of savings due to the efficiency of the telemedicine service amount to about €110 per year per insured, of which approx. 60% is saved by the insurer and 40% by the insured. While the plan is cost-effective, the big winners are the insured who not only save monetary and non-monetary costs, but also benefit from reduced premiums.

Aerotel wins Connected World Gold Award in home health category
Aerotel logo
Aerotel Medical Systems, supplier of advanced remote monitoring solutions for telehealth and telecare, and its partner Cinterion, leader in cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and a Gemalto company, announce winning the Connected World Magazine's prestigious gold Value Chain Award in the home health category for Aerotel's e-CliniQ system and the Connect-CELL telehealth homecare hub. Connected World Magazine's Value Chain Awards honor the most successful corporate adopters of M2M technology and the solution providers that make their success possible.

The Aerotel Connect-CELL hub is intended for home-based chronic disease management applications. It automatically collects data from Bluetooth-enabled medical sensing devices as well as wired devices and uses a Cinterion M2M module to securely send data over cellular networks to a health monitoring center. Authorized doctors and clinicians can log in at anytime and from anywhere in the world to access health measurements and determine treatment approaches.

"Aerotel and its partner Cinterion were honored for using M2M technology to enhance quality of life for patients with chronic conditions by increasing access to doctors and care givers," said Peggy Smedley, editorial director and publisher of Connected World. "Connect-CELL helps cut costs while improving quality of care and it also highlights the transformative power of M2M technology in solving global healthcare challenges."

"Aerotel's Connect-CELL homecare hub uses the latest Cinterion M2M technology to address the urgent need for solutions that reduce spending while improving quality of service for the growing ageing population," commented Norbert Muhrer, CEO of Cinterion. "The use of Connect-CELL has already proven to reduce hospitalization costs by up to 30 percent."

"The Connect-CELL hub is part of Aerotel's e-CliniQ system, which is one of the most cost-effective home telehealth solutions available today with proven clinical and economical benefits," said Ofer Atzmon, Aerotel Medical Systems vice president for business development and marketing. "With Connect-CELL, caregivers can remotely see when a patient is in trouble and respond immediately for increased peace of mind and convenience."

eWaveMD's new eHealth platform: Virtual Medical Consultation (VMC)
eWave MD logo eWaveMD, provider of software solutions for the healthcare industry, unveiled its new eHealth platform at Med-e-Tel 2011, called Virtual Medical Consultation (VMC).

VMC is a unique combination of cloud-based software, a comprehensive EHR, a dedicated hardware and medical devices. It deploys innovative medical technologies to transmit medical information from remote locations to central clinics and hospitals. The platform enables the performance of medical consultations between caregivers and patients located in rural areas. And this is done using available telecommunication infrastructures.

VMC brings modern healthcare services to places where it was not previously available, at a fraction of the cost of the traditional face-to-face medical encounter model. VMC can be utilized in rural clinics to provide patients with direct access to primary care physicians. Furthermore, nursing homes and small hospitals have access to specialists to assist the local care providers.

Additional benefits include increased cost efficiency, reduced transportation expenses, improved patient access to specialists, improved quality of care, etc.

"In spite of the major urbanization trends over the last century, and the effects of globalization, there are approximately 3.4 billion people living in rural areas throughout the world. It is quite obvious that, no matter what their socio-economic status, medical care cannot effectively be provided to remote rural communities," said Oren Shuster, eWaveMD CEO. "To improve the quality of medical care being delivered in rural areas, eWaveMD has developed a comprehensive array of eHealth services that ensure that rural populations can be provided with previously unavailable medical support directly, based upon local needs: virtual consultations and diagnostics, electronic health records (EHR) and disease management."

Engaging students in international Telemedicine and eHealth activities
International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth logo
The ISfTeH Students' Working Group successfully held its 4th Students' Videoconferencing Session at Med-e-Tel 2011. Five ISfTeH student members remotely presented the results of their eHealth research and projects. Through Elluminate Live Multiseat VRoom, all participating students as well as local (Med-e-Tel) and virtual audience could participate and interact, taking advantage of full audio and video Elluminate facilities.

This ISfTeH initiative aims to promote a free of charge participation of students in Telemedicine and eHealth conferences and sessions. The involvement of a new generation of professionals is considered a key component towards a successful implementation of new technologies in health assistance and education.

Since 2009, thanks to a partnership established between the ISfTeH and Elluminate, a free of charge license allows the ISfTeH Students' Working Group to organize live webconferencing sessions for its student members.

The five presentations that were selected for the Students Session at Med-e-Tel 2011 were:
  • Telepharmacy: Phamaceutical Care in Remote Areas of the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest, Flavia Fachel, Brazil
  • A Telecardiology Assistance Project in a Remote Region of the Brazilian Amazon, Christopher Jones, Brazil
  • Factors Hindering Utilization of Telemedicine for Delivery of Specialty Care to Rural and Remote Australia, Sakaleshpura Chandrashekar Nanda Kumar, Australia
  • Willingness to Attend Home Based Exercises Supervised over the Internet, Karolina Krawczak, Poland
  • Acceptance and Usability of the Home Based Rehabilitation Internet Platform among Osteoarthritis Patients, Dominika Cabaj, Poland

In order to promote the participation of students from different countries, the ISfTeH offers an award for the best webconferencing presentation. The award jury was comprised of Dr. Malcolm Fisk (UK), Dr. André Petitet (France) and Prof. Maurice Mars (South Africa). The 2011 award was granted to Karolina Krawczak from Poland, who won a prize of $1.000 to be used for attendance at a next ISfTeH conference.

Additional information and application form for students interested in joining the ISfTeH is available here.
