The Rockefeller Foundation supports work that expands opportunity and strengthens resilience to social, economic, health, and environmental challenges-affirming its pioneering philanthropic mission since 1913 to "promote the well-being" of humanity.
While health spending has increased dramatically around the world, access to affordable, quality services has lagged. The ability to provide good and equitable health services for all people depends, in part, on the performance of health systems-networks of organizations, individuals, government entities, and technological resources dedicated to promoting, maintaining, or restoring health.
The Rockefeller Foundation's Transforming Health Systems initiative has four key strategies:
-
Fostering health systems research and agenda setting for universal health coverage
-
Enhancing professional capacity to plan and manage high-performing health systems
-
Harnessing the resources of the private sector to finance and deliver health services
-
Leveraging interoperable eHealth systems
Hear more about The Rockefeller Foundation's initatives and activities from Karl Brown, Associate Director, in the Med-e-Tel Opening Ceremony Wednesday April 14th at Med-e-Tel 2010.

The mHealth Revolution C. Peter Waegemann, thought leader, futurist, visionary and Vice President of mHealth Initiative, an organization promoting mHealth applications internationally, will address the Med-e-Tel opening session with an overview of the role of mobile systems in our society and ask
the question "What does this mean for healthcare?"
The vision of mHealth as the
new challenging paradigm of healthcare will be explained and its role as the
next generation of traditional telemedicine will be analyzed.
mHealth consists of structural changes in
healthcare, new communication systems that are based on, but not dependent on,
mobile phone systems. Listen to an
analysis of 5,000 new medical applications for iPhones and other
smartphones, and explore the role of smartphones
and tablet-sized devices for healthcare.
Peter Waegemann will describe a "Participatory Health" system, which involves
all wellness and care providers as well as patients, and in which "health and wellness care" will only be partly conducted in the physician's office, clinic or hospital, with much of it occuring in the new "wellness and healthcare communication space". Such a system will be enabled by new
communication patterns based on two pillars, i.e. advanced Internet and mobile
device (mDevice) communication.

Pervasive healthcare via "The Internet of Medical Things" Hear from Günter Schreier, Head of Information Management and eHealth at the Austrian Institute of Technology, during the Med-e-Tel 2010 opening session on April 14, 2010, about his vision on "Pervasive healthcare via the Internet of Medical Things".
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological phenomenon originating from
innovative developments and concepts in information and communication
technology associated with concepts like Ubiquitous Communication/Connectivity,
Pervasive Computing and Ambient Intelligence. It is the logical further development of today's Internet.
Technological
advancements lead to smart objects being able of identifying, locating, sensing
and connecting and thus leading to new forms of communication between people
and things and things themselves. The IoT will encompass technical systems that
are supposed to facilitate a new healthcare concept and support elderly people
and chronically ill patients and their caregivers in managing the healthcare
process in a way so as to achieve an optimal health status or to avoid a
worsening of the illness as long as possible.
Keep In Touch (KIT) is a concept for intuitive human computer interfacing
that uses smart objects and wireless technologies like Near Field Communication
(NFC) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). KIT enables people to exchange
information with health related items of their daily life by simply touching
those things with their NFC enabled mobile phones. Closed Loop Healthcare
Services allow processing of the resulting data and establishing communication
channels between patients, their environment and different groups of
care-givers (physicians, relatives, mobile care provider, etc.). The
combination of KIT (smart objects) and Closed Loop Healthcare Services add up
to an IoT-based infrastructure for pervasive healthcare.
Initial experience with this IoT concept in telemonitoring and medication
intake compliance projects show that these applications are well accepted by
the target group. Such an infrastructure enables new forms of communication
between people and their caregivers and helps to improve the health status of
people with chronic conditions like diabetes and heart failure patients.
Because of its intuitive, easy-to-learn and easy-to-use character, such an IoT
can also facilitate communication between elderly people, their environment and
relevant groups of care givers in the context of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL).
The combination of KIT and Closed Loop Healthcare services is a step
towards pervasive healthcare that allows not only to bridge barriers with
respect to space ("anywhere") and time ("anytime") but also with respect to "anything". All relevant items that are important for a given monitoring
scenario like sensors (medical measurement devices) and actuators (medication
blisters and dispensers) become "smart objects" and thus can be a part of the Internet
of Medical Things that supports healthcare for all people with various chronic
conditions ("everyone").
The Austrian Institute of Technology and partners A&D Medical, DSM TCG, MIR Medical International Research, and Trium, will also present these concepts, technologies and devices in the Med-e-Tel 2010 expo.

Official delegation from Mongolia participates at Med-e-Tel 2010 A delegation of the Cardiovascular Centre project, the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Population Fund in Mongolia will be attending the Med-e-Tel 2010 conference in Luxembourg.
The Cardiovascular Centre project in Mongolia is a telemedicine project that is financially supported by the Government of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. The project began in 2001 following the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between the Prime Ministers of both countries. It is now approaching the end of its second phase, and a third phase is envisioned.
Around 75% of the population is potentially covered by the telemedicine network that the project established between eight provinces of the country with the capital city hospital.
The major characteristics of the project include: designed exclusively to facilitate the routine work of the isolated cardiologists of the distant provincial hospitals; 100% operated by physicians through peer to peer assistance; provide self education material by which the physicians may gain the credits necessary to maintain their license.
The functioning of such a virtual centre relies on a network using regular e-mail for immediate communication, a specialized website for information and education, and recently also an electronic patient record system was added to the network with a forum-like component allowing discussion and advice between all the doctors.
The Cardiovascular Centre project is participating at Med-e-Tel 2010 to share its experience of the development of the electronic patient record system and to learn from the experiences of other international players. For more information or to make an appointment to meet with the delegation at Med-e-Tel, contact Dr. Mungunchimeg Dagva.

Time for a telecare/telehealth investment fund? Telecare Aware (the one-stop for telecare and telehealth news updates) reports on multiple requests by people seeking sources of funding for businesses with telecare and telehealth products and services. These are usually small startups that have one or more elements of a business but lack the skills and/or sufficient funding to take the next steps to get to market. Most are never going to make it but a few have the potential to be world beaters.
On the funding front, the owners will usually have invested a good deal of their own time and capital and, at the time of looking for help, may be reaching their limit. Their funding requirements at this stage are usually too small to interest venture capital companies but too large to obtain from a bank or family and friends. Approaching funding bodies for grants is too slow and haphazard a process - if they can find the matching funding that is often required, that is.
Telecare Aware has therefore recently floated an idea among their readers: "Are you interested in pooling resources to support some of these companies?"
The aim would be to invest in a small number of companies believed to have the potential to establish themselves in their niches and to grow from there. You can respond to a poll at Telecare Aware, or contact Steve Hards for more information or to discuss opportunities.
