Continua Health Alliance holds spring summit in Luxembourg
Med-e-Tel picto The Continua Health Alliance, the industry consortium that aims at establishing a system of interoperable personal telehealth solutions that fosters independence and empowers people and organizations to better manage health and wellness, will hold its spring summit 2008 in Luxembourg during the week of Med-e-Tel. These quarterly summits provide members with details, information and updates relating to Continua progress and insight on future planned events. The Continua working groups meet face-to-face to discuss current activities and tasks. The summits provide extensive networking opportunities with key industry participants and a chance for Continua members to discuss new advancements in the field. Also Continua's first 'plugfest', a cross-vendor interoperability testing, is scheduled for April 16th in Luxembourg.

The summit and plugfest are for Continua members only, but the alliance will also actively contribute to the overall Med-e-Tel program. This will provide opportunities to hear about Continua's activities and its plans and visions for the future, as well as a chance to meet with Continua officials and member organizations.
Med-e-Tel library: global knowledge resource for telemedicine and ehealth
Med-e-Tel picto Med-e-Tel has compiled a library of presentations that were featured at the event since 2002. It is a comprehensive knowledge resource of experience and research that was gathered and conducted in the fields of telemedicine and ehealth over the past six years. The library brings together about 500 abstracts or presentations from care providers, industry representatives, association executives, policy makers, and researchers in economics, mathematics, informatics, social science, medicine and healthcare from over 60 countries around the world. The list can be browsed per year, topic or country and will be updated year after year with new titles and links.

So if you are looking for some specific information, or perhaps for telemedicine and ehealth experts or contact points in your country, why not go through the Med-e-Tel library first? If you need contact details from some of the speakers or authors, feel free to contact us at info@medetel.lu and we will put you in touch with them.

Telenursing symposium scheduled at Med-e-Tel 2008
Med-e-Tel pictoA mini symposium on telenursing will be part of this year's Med-e-Tel. Telenursing is defined by the International Council of Nurses as "the use of telecommunications technology in nursing to enhance patient care". A growing application, telenursing offers possibilities to reduce the use of expensive healthcare services, to reduce hospital admissions or length of stay, to perform regular check-ups on patients with chronic conditions, to spread limited resources over a large population, and to increase access to nurse education. The telenursing session at Med-e-Tel will include an introduction to telenursing, results from a global telenursing survey, and some real life experiences from the United States.

In addition to the focus on telenursing, also a nursing informatics session will be part of the Med-e-Tel program. Nursing informatics is the support of nursing by information systems in delivery, documentation, administration and evaluation of patient care and prevention of diseases. Or as defined by the IMIA Nursing Informatics SIG, "the integration of nursing, its information, and information management with information processing and communication technology, to support the health of people world wide". The session will provide an introduction to nursing informatics, an overview of current initiatives, history and what's ahead for the future, and will conclude with a look at the connection between nursing informatics and telenursing.

More details about the topics and speakers of these sessions will be available on the Med-e-Tel website soon and communicated via this newsletter.
Reducing hospital admission for chest pain symptoms
Med-e-Tel picto Aerotel Medical Systems, leading manufacturers of advanced telemedicine and remote monitoring solutions and long-time Med-e-Tel participant, report on the award winning services of their business partner in the UK, BroomWell Healthwatch.

BroomWell Healthwatch, based in Manchester, offers cardiac monitoring services including electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation service for patients in clinics. It offers non-cardiology clinicians accurate, expert, diagnostic support, enabling them to make informed clinical decisions and provide preventative support to patients with chest pain symptoms. This can reduce the need for hospitalization and deliver cost and resource savings. These services implement advanced handheld wireless ECG monitoring devices manufactured by Aerotel Medical Systems.

The telemedicine service provided by BroomWell has already proven to be a vital diagnostic aid in many parts of the UK, enabling medical staff to make informed clinical decisions and improve outcomes. It has also provided strong clinical risk management, ensuring patients receive the correct care. The service has also had a positive response from patients. Using cardiac telemedicine alongside other conventional methods of evaluation delivers a fast and accurate diagnosis, reassuring the majority of patients that their chest pain symptoms are not indicative of any immediate threatening condition, thus preventing unnecessary hospital visits, whilst those in immediate danger are transferred to definitive care.

A pilot by NHS Northwest, using Aerotel's handheld ECG device and BroomWell's monitoring service, showed 82% of patients did not need to go to hospital following a test, and demonstrated the potential to save 90,000 A&E (Accident and Emergency departments) visits, 45,000 hospital admissions and minimum savings of £46 million per year to the NHS simply by cutting unnecessary hospital admissions and A&E visits for chest pain symptoms.
