Celebrate National Friendship Day With A Girls Getaway to Orlando
Experience a Weekend Retreat with The Getaway Girl
In today's fast-paced world, spending quality time with friends is more important than ever.  And taking a trip with those friends can be a great way to bond and have fun.  In 1935, the U.S. Congress created National Friendship Day to honor the special meaning of friendship.  Recognized on the first Sunday in August each year, this national holiday has been observed for more than 70 years.  Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in U.S., several other countries have adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated by several countries across the world including India.
What better way for women to celebrate this national holiday on Aug. 3 than with girlfriends?  For women, girlfriends come from all aspects of our lives, from mothers, daughters, sisters, childhood and college friends to work colleagues and neighbors, we cherish all of the wonderful women in our lives who we share a special bond.

Author and girls getaway expert Casey Wohl, better known as The Getaway Girl™, has the answer for women who want to celebrate this great holiday and spend time with their girlfriends.  Wohl is hosting the National Friendship Day Girls Getaway to Orlando August 1-3 at the  Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center.

Girls Getaway to Puerto Rico
Recently, The Getaway Girl™ got away to Puerto Rico for a private girls getaway weekend.  After arriving in San Juan late Friday night, we were thrilled to wake up Saturday morning to an awesome view of the pool and beach from our room at the Marriott San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino. After a few hours of beach and pool time, we made our way to the spa for afternoon massages.
After massages, we headed to Old San Juan for the Sofo Culinary Festival. The streets were packed with people sampling delicious cuisine, festive cocktails and enjoying live music and street performers.  While in Old San Juan, we wanted to get dinner and drinks. We made our way into a restaurant called Marmalade, which is located on Fortaleza Street. We ordered a pomegranate martini and a mojito, as well as paella bytes, baby field greens with honey passion fruit vinaigrette, tiny white bean soup with black truffle oil, and ceviche. Everything was absolutely amazing! I now have a new favorite restaurant. This place is a "must-visit" during your time in Puerto Rico.
Chef Peter Schintler, originally from Iowa, has been all over the world studying and preparing amazing food. He currently brings his extraordinary flair for exquisite and creative cuisine to Old San Juan. Thank you for one of my favorite meals to date.

Also, many thanks to Rob for his impeccable service and wonderful recommendations.
On Sunday, we rented a car from Charlie Car Rental (across from our hotel) and drove to El Yunque, a nearby rainforest located southeast of San Juan. It was nice to venture outside the city  and see other parts of the country. Compared to other countries, Puerto Rico is very Americanized. We saw many familiar businesses (Wendy's, Office Depot, etc), most everyone speaks English and the dollar is used here, so there was no need to convert currency.
Once we arrived at El Yunque, we ate lunch at Yuquiyu Delights, an outdoor cafe that served hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza, as well as authentic Puerto Rican food (I tried the alcapurrias, which are plantains filled with ground beef or crab meat). After lunch, we hiked the Trail Bano de Oro, which was about a 30 minute trek through the rainforest. The tropical foliage was beautiful, and the hike was just long enough to allow us to stretch our legs and work off lunch before getting back into the car.

After our visit to the rainforest, we met up with some of my friends from Orlando.  Nina, Nicole, Lisa, Sarah and Jo Beth were staying in Humucao, which is south of El Yunque.  Nicole is from Puerto Rico and was very helpful in planning our trip.  We enjoyed wine, appetizers, dinner and great conversations at their condo in Palmas Del Mar. After dinner we cautiously attended a "foam party" at the local hangout, the Sugar Cube.  Manolo (the bar owner, not the shoe) insisted we start with his infamous strawberry rum shots as he filled the bar with tons of foam for us all to play in. It was downhill from there.....what happens in Puerto Rico, stays in Puerto Rico.

Monday was our last day in Puerto Rico, so we went back to Old San Juan for some history and shopping.  Columbus Square, or Plaza de Colon, is a well known landmark in Old San Juan. The plaza used to be known as St. James Square but it was renamed in 1893 as part of celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first arrival to Puerto Rico. In the center of Columbus Square is a solid stone column on which stands a marble statue of the legendary maritime explorer. The right hand of the statue holds a flag while a globe rests in the palm of his left hand.

Unfortunately, we did not have enough time in Puerto Rico to see and experience everything this wonderful island has to offer.  This simply means we will have to go back soon for another fabulous girls getaway.
Barnes & Noble Book Signing
Many thanks to everyone who stopped by the Barnes & Noble book signing on June 28.  We had a fabulous Girl's Night Out (GNO).  A special thanks to the B&N staff for hosting the event and offering heir assistance to make this a great event.

After the book signing, we stopped by Roy's Restaurant (, a feature in the book, where we had more fun.  Thank you to Karen, Miguel, Ryan and GiGi for a wonderful evening.  We started with Hawaiian Martinis and feasted on all sorts of delicious food items, including the Lakanilau Roll and the Hawaiian Style Misoyaki Butterfish.  WOW!  We ended the meal with the Melting Chocolate Souffle', which was amazing.

American Idol in Orlando

My good friend and sister-in-law Carly and I recently enjoyed an awesome Girls Night Out (GNO). We met at Bahama Breeze for dinner, then went to see American Idol finalist Phil Stacey perform here in Orlando. Thank you Phil for a great concert and for meeting us backstage.
