"Rainy Days & Mondays  . . . "

"Rainy days and Mondays always get me down," are the lyrics to the 1971 song by the Carpenters.  As I sat one rainy Monday morning I could understand how gloomy weather, hard times and the struggles of life might cause a person to have a lack of enthusiasm or motivation.  But today it's so important for individuals, businesses and organizations to appreciate the value of the exercise patterns we've developed, or to start NOW in preparation for days just like this.

As an individual it is important to eat right, maintain your weight, and exercise on a regular basis so when hard times come you have the stamina and resiliency to work through them. Consistency of life patterns forms the anchors keeping you in place during rough weather.  Many individuals I speak with today are weathering the current economic crisis using the solid patterns of consistent behaviors they established earlier in their lives.   These patterns are now serving them well!  This is not to say that you can't develop them in the midst of chaos.  You can!  But it's the developing of them that's important.  It's not so much what you do, but that you do, that determines how you'll do.

Some individuals turn to drinking, drugs or eating, others look for an affair, and still others spend their now idle time surfing the Internet getting lost in the endless pages of information, numbing themselves in network nirvana.   To what end?  Life is a verb, not a noun.  It denotes action and living.  We need to move to make a difference in ourselves and our lives.

For businesses and organizations the same holds true. Developing patterns of consistently applied behavior is vital to maintaining the health of your business and organization.  Regular review of your financials, maintaining and executing marketing strategies, regularly scheduling product development, and consistently assessing your progress are all exercises that keep your business moving forward and allow you to detect retreating cycles as they occur.

Rainy days and Mondays may get you down but they don't have to keep you down.  You're the only one that can do that! Refuse to accept the tenancy to retreat into old patterns of thought, self-defeating behaviors, or purposeful mind numbing.  Determine today to commit yourself and your organization to living life fully, exercising yourself mentally, spiritually, and physically, while practicing daily those things you know you should do.  With Facebook accounting for one fifth of the divorces in the country today, and addiction rates for mature adults skyrocketing, we need more than ever to find our track and get on it.  Is this easier said than done?  You bet ya!  But do it anyway!

Be well,

John
