In a meeting I once heard someone say, "The only ones who
like change are babies, and they don't lie still for it." Somewhere, sometime in our lives
we all get the illusion that life is, rather than was. As you read these words, your life is
passing. The seconds, minutes,
hours, days, weeks, and years you spend are gone, but what you did in those
periods of time shows up in our future.
We are the results of what we have done and thought, and not what we are
at this moment.
In our previous newsletter we talked about change and
developing a tolerance for change in your environment. Here we'll answer; how do we really
create change in ourselves? Often
you'll hear folks talking about changing their thinking as "Getting out
of the box." My question is; how do you
know when you are in a box?
Begin by asking yourself three questions:
First, do I wake up daily looking forward to the day? A life worth living is the life you
make, and not the one that is provided for you. What do I mean by a life provided? Most people I speak to tell me they feel like life is coming
at them, and that they are not in charge of the life they are leading. Either you lead the life you want, or
life will create one for you. So,
are you living the life you want or the one provided for you? Realizing that the life you live is the
one you create is a very empowering reality. Whether you take charge of
it or let it happen, in either instance, you create it. You have heard the saying that "the
past is history, the future a mystery, and today is a gift, that's why they
call it the present." I can tell you that being in a box is not the image of a
life I want to live!
Secondly, does the life you are living scare you just a
little bit? Are you trying things
from time to time that are new, exciting and on the upper edge of your ability
and experience? Now I'm not
suggesting you take foolish chances.
But I am talking about suggesting that you take sound, calculated, well
thought out risks to move into living the life you really want. Some folks live like they are already in
the after life, instead of being in the life they're here after! Try something new. Learn an instrument, take up a new
language, discover a new restaurant, take scuba lessons, or go to a place you
have never been. What have you
always wanted to do, but haven't? Yesterday
is history, but today is a choice as to what I make it, knowing that my
thoughts today becomes what I'll be and have tomorrow!
Third, begin changing the way your mind works by working
your mind in new ways. According
to new brain research introducing new activities that are manageable, repetitive,
and easy creates changes in the way your brain works. If you change your brain, you change your thinking; a.k.a.
thinking out of the box! Move your
computer mouse to the other side of your keyboard and use your alternate hand,
take some notes using your non-dominant hand, learn to juggle, walk on uneven
ground, alter your routines, learn mind mapping, discover dialoguing, walk a
labyrinth, or begin drawing what you see in your surroundings. Boldly go were no other person's tread,
the road less traveled is in your head!
Be well!
